Key Takeaways
- 500–600 salaried IT positions laid off globally, strongest impact in Austin and Warren.

- Reductions began around May 11, 2026, with reports from CNBC and TechCrunch.
GM reshapes IT workforce
General Motors began layoffs on Monday that affected approximately 500 to 600 salaried IT employees worldwide, as the automaker restructures its workforce and reduces costs while continuing to invest in artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicle development.
“General Motors has laid off more than 10% of its information technology department, affecting approximately 600 salaried employees, in a deliberate skills swap designed to clear out legacy roles and make room for workers with artificial intelligence expertise”
The cuts are concentrated in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan, and GM confirmed the reductions as part of an initiative to transform its IT organization and better position the company for the future.

At the end of last year, GM employed around 68,000 salaried workers globally, including 47,000 white-collar employees in the United States, even as it continued to hire for IT roles.
The Indian Express said the layoffs affect more than 10 per cent of the company’s IT department and described the move as a broader “skills swap” strategy.
In a statement to TechCrunch, GM said, “GM is transforming its Information Technology organisation to better position the company for the future.”
AI hiring replaces legacy
While GM confirmed the cuts, it also continued hiring for IT roles, and CNBC said the company has 82 open IT positions that include jobs working in artificial intelligence, motorsports and autonomous vehicles.
The Indian Express reported GM is prioritising candidates with expertise in artificial intelligence, data engineering, cloud infrastructure, analytics, and AI-native software development, including engineers who can build AI systems “from the ground up.”

Business Today said GM reduced its IT headcount by over 10% and highlighted that the company may plan to hire AI-native development, data engineering and analytics, cloud-based engineering, and roles for developing AI agents and models.
In a statement to TechCrunch, GM framed the restructuring as future-focused, saying, “GM is transforming its Information Technology organisation to better position the company for the future,” while the company also said it was designed to better prepare the company for the future.
CBT News added that GM is still actively hiring for IT roles and currently has dozens of open positions in artificial intelligence, motorsports, and autonomous vehicle development.
What’s at stake next
GM’s IT overhaul is unfolding alongside earlier technology cuts, including a prior layoff of more than 200 Computer-Aided Design, or CAD, engineers due to “business conditions,” and the latest reductions are part of the same pattern of reassessing salaried staffing levels and skill requirements.
“Key information: General Motors is cutting 500 to 600 IT positions to reduce costs and focus on skills in emerging technologies”
The Indian Express said GM has spent the past 18 months steadily reorganising its software and technology operations, and it tied the acceleration to Sterling Anderson joining in 2025 as chief product officer.
Business Today said Anderson has been working to merge GM’s technology units into a single organisation and reported that several senior software executives, including Baris Cetinok, Dave Richardson, and Barak Turovsky, exited the company.
The Indian Express also reported GM hired former Apple employee Behrad Toghi as AI lead and appointed former Cruise executive Rashed Haq as vice-president of autonomous vehicles.
CBT News said GM employed around 68,000 salaried workers globally at the end of last year, and it said the automaker will support affected employees during their transition as it continues to shift toward AI and autonomous vehicle roles.
