German Students Protest at Free University of Berlin, Demand Academic Boycott of Israeli Institutions

Students at Berlin’s Free University (FU) staged a protest Thursday to demand that the university administration join an academic boycott of Israeli institutions.

Demonstrators gathered outside the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Free University of Berlin, calling on the university to sever its academic ties with Israel.

They held banners reading “Students against genocide: Stop the complicity” and “Anthropology students demand academic boycott.”

The protesters chanted slogans including “Stop the genocide”, “Boycott Israel”, “From Berlin to Gaza, intifada”, and “Freedom for Palestine.”

Speakers at the rally demanded FU Berlin end cooperation with Israeli academic institutions, warning that continued ties would make the university complicit in Israel's genocide in the Gaza Strip and apartheid regime against Palestinians.

WAFA described the demonstration as students in Berlin holding a protest on Thursday demanding an academic boycott of Israel.

WAFA said the demonstrators held banners with slogans such as “Students Against Genocide,” “Stop Complicity in Crime,” “Anthropology Students Demand Academic Boycott,” and “Boycott Apartheid Universities.”

WAFA also reported that the students chanted “Stop the Genocide,” “Boycott Israel,” and “Freedom for Palestine.”

The protest unfolded as TRT Français reported that Germany and France warned against an escalation of the conflict in Iran, with German foreign minister Johann Wadephul saying, "personne n'a intérêt à voir ce conflit armé s'aggraver".

TRT Français quoted Wadephul adding that the conflict presents “un réel potentiel d'escalade, non seulement dans la région, mais aussi dans le monde entier”.

In the same TRT Français account, French foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot said, "Nous devons mettre un terme à l’escalade militaire ; elle est dangereuse et hors de contrôle."
