Drone washes ashore
Greek authorities launched an investigation after a military naval drone washed ashore on an island off the country’s western coast, with the vessel found inside a coastal cave on the island of Lefkada on Thursday.
“- Published The Greek military is examining a mysterious unmanned naval drone spotted in the Ionian Sea by local fishermen”
Qatar news agency QNA said the drone was transferred to a naval base on the mainland for examination, while Greek naval experts indicated its characteristics were similar to the Ukrainian "Magura" drones, which are remotely detonated suicide vessel.

The discovery was also described by CNA as a sea drone recovered by a coastguard patrol vessel after fishermen alerted them, before it was handed over to the defence ministry.
CNA quoted a retired vice admiral, Stelios Fenekos, saying the black drone had "all the features that constitute a military drone for military use," and Greek defence ministry sources said the military was investigating.
What the drone carried
Multiple outlets reported that initial findings pointed to detonators but no explosives, with Ekathimerini saying the unmanned vessel contained detonators but no explosives, easing early concerns and triggering a multi-agency response.
The Maritime Executive reported that the boat was positively identified as a Ukrainian Magura V3 and was handled as a potential explosive device, then dismantled by EOD experts to ensure safety.

The Maritime Executive also said the boat’s engine was running and it was moving in circles, and it described images suggesting artisanal construction with a Starlink terminal next to an electro-optical camera.
In a separate account, eKathimerini said investigators were examining scenarios including the possibility the drone could have been used in drug trafficking operations, while also not ruling out a connection to planned attacks targeting vessels linked to Russia’s "shadow fleet."
Purpose and wider risks
As Greek authorities examined possible purpose and whether the drone ended up in Greek territorial waters due to technical failure or loss of communication, the BBC said Greek military experts would look at establishing the drone’s possible purpose.
“The unmanned marine vehicle discovered Thursday in waters off southern Lefkada in the Ionian Sea has been identified by officials as a Ukrainian Magura V3, according to statements released on Friday”
The BBC also reported that one version was that the drone could have been prepared against Russia's "shadow fleet," and it described the term as referring to hundreds of tankers transporting Moscow's oil and gas to bypass Western sanctions.
The Maritime Executive framed the lost drone boat as an operational concern for navies and special-warfare units, warning that if a secret drone boat loses steerage, propulsion or comms, it can pose risks including inciting a diplomatic incident or allowing technological details to leak.
In parallel, the QNA report said Greek authorities had not yet revealed the vessel’s origin, while Greek naval experts pointed to similarities with Ukrainian Magura drones, keeping the investigation focused on identification and intent.
