IED hits Israeli forces

The Israeli occupation army said that on Sunday an improvised explosive device explosion in southern Lebanon wounded four soldiers, and it added that 105 soldiers were injured in battles in southern Lebanon over the past week.

The Israeli army later announced that Hezbollah launched drones and mortar shells toward Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, while the Lebanese Shiite movement denied involvement in an earlier incident involving UNIFIL personnel.

Le Monde reported that on Saturday, April 18, Staff Sergeant Florian Montorio, a French UNIFIL soldier, was killed and three others wounded in an ambush in southern Lebanon, and it said Macron stated, "All signs point to Hezbollah being responsible."

Hezbollah response and denials

Hezbollah said it targeted a bulldozer and a gathering of vehicles and soldiers of the Israeli army in southern Lebanon in response to what it called "Tel Aviv’s bloody violations of the ceasefire agreement."

In one statement, Hezbollah said its fighters shelled a gathering of the Israeli enemy’s vehicles at Khallet Raj in the town of Deir Siran, southern Lebanon, and in another it said its fighters targeted "a gathering of vehicles and soldiers of the Israeli army in the town of Rashaf (Nabatieh Governorate) with a volley of missiles."

Le Monde described a separate dispute over responsibility for the UNIFIL ambush, quoting a French source saying, "there was no decision by the central command" of the Shiite movement to target them.

The same Le Monde account said the incident occurred at Al-Ghandouriyé, not far from the Deir Kifa base where the 550 French troops of the UNIFIL contingent stationed there participate in Operation Daman, and it said the town of Al-Qantara was occupied by the Israeli army.

Ceasefire fragility and escalation

The sources tied the fighting to a fragile ceasefire, with Al Jazeera saying a third round of talks in Washington concluded with a 45-day extension of the ceasefire until early July.
