Key Takeaways

  • Israel conducted strikes in southern Lebanon amid ongoing clashes, with casualties reported.
  • A ceasefire or partial ceasefire with Hezbollah was agreed, halting major Israeli strikes.
  • Lebanese Hezbollah leaders reject direct negotiations with Israel, citing security conditions.

Ceasefire, strikes, and deaths

Israel continued strikes in southern Lebanon while a partial ceasefire with Hezbollah appeared to hold, with Lebanon saying Israeli forces would not bomb the capital in exchange for Hezbollah not attacking Israel.

The BBC reported that the Lebanese health ministry said four people were killed and 127 injured when Israeli air strikes hit buildings next to Jabal Amel hospital in the city of Tyre on Monday afternoon.

In the same period, L'Orient Today said an interceptor missile fell on the Qennaya road below the town of Baaloul in West Bekaa, and it described continued Israeli air and drone strikes including targeting the village of Aita al-Jabal in the Bint Jbeil district.

L'Orient Today also said Hezbollah claimed strikes on Sunday targeting Shomera and Yiftah barracks, as well as the Hadab Yaroun and Sadah sites, and Israeli artillery positions south of Kiryat Shmona using rockets.

The BBC added that Lebanon was drawn into the war between the US, Israel and Iran on 2 March, when Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel in retaliation for an Israeli strike that killed Iran's supreme leader.

Competing claims and voices

After the ceasefire announcement, the BBC said the Israeli military intercepted two projectiles fired into northern Israel, while Hezbollah said it had attacked Israeli forces in southern Lebanon where officials reported deadly Israeli strikes.

The BBC quoted Dr Wael Mroueh, the hospital's director, saying, "The Israeli enemy targets journalists, ambulance workers, medical staff."

L'Orient Today reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told U.S. President Donald Trump that "if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and our citizens, Israel will strike terrorist targets in Beirut."

In parallel, L'Orient Today said a Qatari diplomatic source told Al Jazeera that Doha stepped up contacts on Monday to prevent strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs after the U.S. informed Qatar of cancellation of planned strikes.

The BBC also reported that Lebanon's civil defence agency said another Israeli strike hit its centre in Kfar Sir in Nabatieh district, causing damage but no casualties.

What’s at stake next

The BBC said at least 3,468 people have been killed in Lebanon since the start of the war, according to the country's health ministry, and it added that the UN says more than one million people have registered themselves as displaced in Lebanon.

L'Orient Today reported that the UN Secretary-General said maintaining a U.N. military presence in Lebanon after the withdrawal of the current peacekeeping force (UNIFIL) at the end of 2026 will be “necessary,” and it described three options ranging from nearly 2,000 to over 5,500 uniformed personnel.

L'Orient Today also said the report was requested by the Security Council and that UNIFIL, which currently has about 7,500 peacekeepers, is set to see its mandate expire at the end of December under a resolution adopted by the Security Council in August 2025 under U.S. pressure.

The BBC described an Israeli military evacuation order for Nabatieh town on Tuesday afternoon, warning residents it was "compelled to act forcefully" against Hezbollah there because of the group's "violation of the ceasefire agreement".

In a separate statement, L'Orient Today said Lebanon received confirmation of Hezbollah’s approval of a U.S. proposal for a mutual halt to attacks, with Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs stopping in exchange for Hezbollah’s commitment not to carry out any attacks against Israel.
