Houston traffic stop death
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican man, in Houston during a traffic stop as part of a “targeted enforcement operation,” according to the Department of Homeland Security and ICE.

The DHS account said Araujo “rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle” before the officer fired in self-defense, and DHS said he died from his injuries after being taken to a hospital.
Araujo’s son Ronaldo Salgado said his father was a construction worker driving to pick up colleagues to finish work on houses, and he said Araujo was likely scared when he saw unmarked cars following him.
The BBC reported the incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. in Magnolia Park, and it said Salgado Araújo was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Family demands transparency
At a Wednesday news conference, Ronaldo Salgado said, “Had my father seen an emblem of ICE, or an emblem that says anything about a law enforcement agency, my father would have complied; he would have stopped,” and he demanded an independent investigation.
Democratic Rep. Sylvia Garcia of Texas joined Araujo’s family and said, “ICE has released its version of the story,” adding that “they’re only allegations so please remember that.”
The BBC described a bystander video posted online by KRIV-TV showing agents crouched beside a man lying on the driver’s side of a white van, with two other men on the other side in handcuffs.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said he believed federal officials must conduct a “transparent, independent investigation,” while the League of United Latin American Citizens called for a “full federal” and “independent” investigation and asked Houston Police Department to investigate in the East End.
Wider immigration enforcement scrutiny
The shooting in Houston intensified scrutiny of ICE’s use of force, with the Time Magazine describing it as coming about six months after federal officers “shot and killed two Americans” in separate encounters during the Trump Administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.

CNN reported the incident was the second ICE-involved shooting in less than a week and said it came amid an uptick in immigration enforcement prompted by President Donald Trump’s sweeping deportation agenda.
The BBC said the case is being investigated by the FBI and the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and it quoted a local resident, Gina Danielsen, saying, “This is what they are doing, killing innocent Mexicans.”
In Houston, the League of United Latin American Citizens president Ramón Palomares said, “This is not an isolated event across the nation,” and he argued that “We have seen a pattern of ICE involvement in shootings and excessive use of force.”
