Momeni arrives in Islamabad

Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni arrived in Pakistan on Monday to meet Pakistani leadership as tensions between Iran and the US continued to rise.

Hindustan Times said Momeni was received by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who invited him to visit the country, and Iranian official IRNA confirmed the arrival in a post on X.

The Hindustan Times report added that the visit was aimed at “boosting cooperation between the two nations,” and that Momeni was set to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.

APA.az also reported that Naqvi welcomed Momeni and a delegation of Iranian officials at the airport and told him he hoped Momeni “brought good news.”

Talks amid US-Iran escalation

Hindustan Times said the visit came as the military confrontation between Iran and the US continued to escalate, with the US carrying out strikes on multiple targets in Iran and Tehran retaliating by targeting American interests in West Asia.

Arab News reported that Momeni would arrive in Islamabad on Monday with a high-level delegation for talks with Pakistani leaders, with an interior ministry official telling the outlet that the visit was intended to sustain diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran despite renewed military escalation.

Arab News also said Pakistan hosted direct talks between US and Iranian officials in April and helped broker the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding in June alongside Qatar, committing Washington and Tehran to halt hostilities and launch negotiations.

In Islamabad, Hindustan Times quoted Geo News saying Naqvi told reporters that the Iranian leader had come with some "good news" and that the visit would help further strengthen bilateral ties.

Regional diplomacy and next steps

Arab News said the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was followed by talks in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, where officials established a High-Level Committee and adopted a 60-day roadmap for negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief and a dispute-resolution mechanism.

Hindustan Times reported that Pakistan’s efforts were aimed at easing tensions between Iran and the United States, citing a Pakistani interior ministry source to AFP that Momeni would hold talks with Pakistani officials while not officially confirming whether the trip was linked to mediation efforts.

APA.az added that Naqvi hoped Momeni “brought good news,” and it described the visit as involving talks with Pakistani leadership after Momeni’s arrival in Islamabad.

The channel Al Alam Fars News Agency, as carried by Mawazin News, said that after the Pakistan visit the interior minister would travel to New Delhi at the invitation of the Indian interior minister to participate in a meeting of interior ministers and emergency officials from BRICS countries.
