Jets, sovereignty, and pressure

An Iraqi politician warned that flights of American fighter jets over Mosul violate Iraq’s national sovereignty and raise questions about the “nature and timing” of the movements, according to an IRNA report citing Al-Malooma.

The warning was delivered by Jassim Mohammed, described as a former member of the Iraqi Parliament, who said that “the broad flights of American fighter jets over Mosul constitute a violation of national sovereignty.”

Mohammed argued that the continuation of American fighter jet flights in the sky over Mosul “indicates disregard for this country’s sovereignty” and “falls among the political and security pressures imposed by Washington on Iraq.”

He added that the movements “at this juncture have worrying consequences” and “indicate an attempt to impose a specific security reality or to spy on the movements of security forces and the Popular Mobilization Forces in those areas.”

Mohammed said the government and official institutions must take a firm stance and clarify whether the flights are conducted with their knowledge, “in which case it would constitute an explicit violation of Iraqi airspace.”

He also stated that “Iraq’s airspace must be under full national control,” and that repeating such movements sends “negative signals about the weakness of air defenses” and makes “diplomatic and security measures necessary to prevent turning Iraqi cities into an open arena for foreign fighter jets.”

The IRNA report also noted that Karim Aliwi, a member of the Iraqi Parliament’s Security and Defense Committee, urged “real and effective pressure on the new government to end the American military presence in Iraq.”

Embassy orders and drone attacks

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad urged American nationals to leave Iraq immediately after what it described as a series of attacks targeted American interests, warning of “armed groups” in Iraq, according to a statement posted on the X platform.

The embassy said that “Iraqi armed groups have carried out in the past hours several drone attacks near the Diplomatic Support Center and Baghdad International Airport.”

It warned that “these groups may intend to carry out additional attacks targeting American citizens, diplomatic facilities, energy infrastructure, hotels, airports, and sites associated with the United States, as well as Iraqi and civilian targets.”

The embassy said that “the risks remain despite the Iraqi authorities' announcement of their intention to reopen the airspace and resume commercial flights,” and it stressed that “air travel within Iraq remains unsafe due to the potential for rockets or drones or projectiles in Iraqi airspace.”

It urged American citizens to avoid airports entirely and not to attempt to reach the embassy in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil in the Kurdistan region due to “sensitive security conditions.”

The embassy renewed its Level 4 Travel Advisory, stating that “travel to Iraq is not safe at all at this time, and staying in the country exposes American citizens to grave risks, given the possibility of kidnapping or direct targeting by armed groups.”

It also said that “the available departure options consist of land routes to Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, with long border delays expected.”

A separate report from Masrawy similarly said the embassy warned that “Iran-backed armed groups carried out drone attacks near the embassy compound and Baghdad International Airport,” and it added that the embassy advised “U.S. citizens in Iraq are urged to depart the country by land at this time.”

Iran-backed militias and the ceasefire

Masrawy said that in a statement on Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy stated that “Iran-backed armed groups carried out several drone attacks near the Diplomatic Support Center and Baghdad International Airport on April 8, 2026.”

It added that these militias “may intend to launch additional terrorist attacks against American citizens and targets linked to the United States across Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region.”

The embassy also noted that “although Iraqi authorities announced plans to reopen airspace and resume commercial flights, American citizens are advised not to travel by air within Iraq due to the ongoing risks from rockets, drones, and projectiles in Iraqi airspace.”

In a related report, الترا العراق said the embassy warned that “Iran-backed militias may intend to target American citizens and diplomatic facilities, hotels, and airports, hours after Washington and Tehran announced a halt to the ceasefire agreement.”

That report described the embassy statement as saying that “Iranian-backed Iraqi terrorist militias carried out several drone attacks near the Diplomatic Support Center and Baghdad International Airport on April 8,” and it repeated that American citizens should not travel by air due to “the ongoing risks from missiles, drones, and projectiles in Iraqi airspace.”

The same report said the embassy warned that “Iranian-backed militant groups may intend to target American citizens, diplomatic facilities, companies, universities, energy infrastructure, hotels, airports, and other sites believed to be linked to the United States.”

It also stated that the embassy said these militant groups “may have targeted American citizens for kidnapping.”

Warnings, travel bans, and a new airspace

A separate warning emphasized that even after Iraq reopened its airspace, U.S. citizens should avoid flights within Iraq because of ongoing risks.

In yalibnan’s report, the U.S. Embassy in Iraq said in a statement on social media: “Individuals considering air travel within Iraq should be aware of the ongoing potential risks posed by missiles, drones, and rocket-propelled grenades in Iraqi airspace.”

The embassy added that “Iraq’s Iran-aligned terrorist militias continue to plan additional attacks against American citizens and US-associated targets throughout Iraq.”

The same report quoted the embassy’s guidance: “Do not travel to Iraq for any reason. Depart now if you are there.”

The Arabic-language post included a dated warning that reads “تحذير أمني – سفارة الولايات المتحدة بغداد، العراق – 5 أيار\u0005مايو 2026 — U.S. Embassy Baghdad (@USEmbBaghdad) May 5, 2026,” and it stated that “العراق أُعيد فتح المجال الجوي العراقي، وتعمل رحلات تجارية محدودة حاليًا.”

It continued: “ينبغي على من يفكرون في السفر الجوي داخل العراق أن يكونوا على دراية بالمخاطر المحتملة المستمرة لوجود صواريخ وطائرات مسيّرة وقذائف…,” and it warned that “Iraq’s Iran-aligned terrorist militias continue to plan additional attacks.”

The embassy’s travel posture also appeared in the earlier Arabic report from الترا العراق, which said the embassy reminded American citizens of “the Level 4 travel advisory: Do not travel to Iraq” and told them “Do not travel to Iraq for any reason. Leave immediately if you are there.”

In that same report, the embassy said “American citizens who choose to stay in Iraq are putting themselves at grave risk,” and it reiterated that “Leave immediately” was the instruction.

Hezbollah threatens and frames the fight

Economy News, citing ISNA, reported that Abu al-Husayn al-Humaidawi, secretary-general of the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, issued a formal statement stressing that “the axis of resistance will stand beside the Islamic Republic of Iran against any possible aggression.”

In that statement, he warned the United States that “any renewed war against Iran will not be easy; rather, it will be a fire whose resources are destroyed and which will bring it humiliation.”

Al-Humaidawi said: “War against Iran is not entertainment; it is a fire that, once blazing, will only subside when your noses are ground into the dust, and you will pay a price many times greater than what your greed-driven masters seek to obtain.”

He also described the conflict as “a new page in the battle between the two fronts of truth and falsehood,” and he said “The front of truth, with the help of God Almighty, has clear dimensions and a defined identity.”

The statement asserted that “No one has escaped their oppression and tyranny, except those who have accepted to be tools for achieving their satanic and vile goals.”

Al-Humaidawi said the “head of the front of falsehood is preparing means to target the Islamic Republic in Iran, the fortress of Muhammadan Islam, the source of the nation’s pride and the shield of its honor and its affairs.”

The same statement also warned Iraqi people and brothers in the axis of resistance “against negligence and rumor-mongering,” telling them: “You must fear negligence and pay no attention to the voices of traitors and rumor-mongers.”
