Key Takeaways

  • Israeli airstrikes hit near Jabal Amel Hospital in Tyre, injuring 25 staff and damaging facilities.
  • Strikes in southern Lebanon caused civilian casualties, with reports of multiple fatalities.
  • Trump asserted de-escalation and a halt to fighting, with partial ceasefire talks underway.

Ceasefire promise, strikes continue

Israeli forces launched new strikes in Lebanon on Tuesday after accusing Hezbollah of launching attacks overnight, even as President Donald Trump said both sides had agreed to de-escalate and that “all shooting will stop.”

NBC News reported that the Lebanese Civil Defense said six people were killed in an Israeli strike Monday night in the village of Marwaniyeh in southern Lebanon, and that its center in Nabatieh was subject to “direct targeting as a result of a hostile Israeli airstrike.”

The fighting also continued around the MSF-supported Jabal Amel Hospital in Sour (Tyre), where Doctors Without Borders said an Israeli airstrike killed several people, injured medical staff, and caused extensive damage to the facility.

The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, as cited by MSF, said the attack killed four people and injured 127, including 39 hospital staff, with four of the injured staff in critical condition in intensive care.

Voices clash over responsibility

Doctors Without Borders project coordinator Omar Ebeid condemned the attack near Jabal Amel Hospital, saying, “These repeated attacks reflect a grave failure to protect the medical mission and underscore the urgent need to safeguard civilians, medical staff, health facilities, and continuous access to lifesaving care.”

In parallel, the BBC described the aftermath outside Jabal Amel Hospital as “utter devastation,” with chunks of concrete and twisted metal scattered across the area after Israeli air strikes hit buildings next to the hospital on Monday afternoon.

The BBC quoted hospital director Dr Wael Mroueh denying that there was a military target nearby, saying, “The Israeli enemy targets journalists, ambulance workers, medical staff. It makes no difference, and all it wants is to kick us out of our country.”

The Israeli military, as described by the BBC, said it struck “Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure” in the area while emphasizing that the hospital “was not targeted” and was “apparently affected incidentally as a result of the strikes.”

Humanitarian stakes and next talks

The UN health agency in Lebanon, via the UN News report, said it was verifying reports of strikes on Jabal Amel Hospital and warned that the attacks “caused significant damage…to the emergency department and intensive care unit,” while initial information from Lebanese authorities put injuries at “at least 86 people, including healthcare workers.”

The same UN News report said WHO has verified almost 190 attacks on healthcare in just three months, with “killed 128 healthcare workers and injured 332 others,” and that the past week alone saw 11 attacks.

In Washington, a new round of talks between Israel and Lebanon was scheduled as Lebanese negotiators sought a full ceasefire, with the AP reporting that another round began Tuesday in Washington and that Lebanese negotiators would seek a full ceasefire that would prevent future attacks.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam told the AP that negotiations were “the least costly option for Lebanon and the Lebanese people,” and that it was “the shortest road to the occupation and allow our people in the south to return to the cities and villages.”
