Lamine Yamal Waves Palestinian Flag During Barcelona La Liga Title Parade

Barcelona celebrated winning the La Liga title with a parade through the streets of the Catalan city, and Spanish superstar Lamine Yamal drew attention by waving a Palestinian flag from inside an open-top bus.

TRT World said the 18-year-old was seen waving the flag in several clips shared online on Monday, as tens of thousands of people lined Barcelona’s streets to greet the team.

Al Jazeera also described the moment as the 18-year-old waving a Palestinian flag from inside an open-top bus to cheers from jubilant crowds during the parade.

The celebrations came after Barca won their 29th La Liga title with a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid on Sunday, marking the second time the league’s title had been decided by the result of an El Clasico match.

The parade was tied to the club’s on-field success and the city’s pro-Palestinian activism, with TRT World pointing to Barcelona as a major hub for pro-Palestinian activism in Spain since the start of the genocide in Gaza in October 2023.

MARCA described the parade as beginning at 5:20 p.m. at Spotify Camp Nou and ending at 10:00 p.m., with the club’s 125th-anniversary anthem playing and the starting gun fired for Barcelona’s champions’ victory parade.

In MARCA’s account, Lamine Yamal “tried his hand at a few dance moves,” showed a T-shirt thanking God for not being a Real Madrid fan, and “waved a Palestinian flag for several minutes.”

The Middle East Eye live blog update said footage shared online showed Yamal holding the flag as tens of thousands of supporters gathered to mark the club’s success.

In a different framing, Tribuna.com said the gesture sparked reaction across social media and that “The gesture was interpreted by some supporters as a sign of solidarity amid the ongoing Israel–Palestine conflict.”

Tribuna.com also included comments reacting to the flag, including one that called it “The Terrorist flag!” and another reply that said “Am Israel Chay!”

Beyond the parade footage, The Television العربي said Israeli media attacked Yamal after his celebration, and it quoted Channel 12 saying that Yamal “took advantage of the football occasion to express his political stance.”

The Television العربي also reported that Channel 12 contrasted Yamal’s Palestinian flag with Barcelona players celebrating the Spanish league title wearing club scarves, adding that Yamal celebrated “in opposition to the rest of his teammates.”

In the same account, Yamal spoke during the parade and thanked fans who filled the streets, saying: “It's unbelievable; they are always with us, on the important days and on the less important days.”

The Television العربي further said Yamal stressed valuing every trophy and quoted him saying: “We must give each title its true value, because winning is not easy.”

It also reported Yamal’s stated ambition for a future celebration, saying he said: “A Champions League parade? That will definitely happen.”
