Mayor Mamdani Expands NYC 2-K Childcare to Full-Day, Year-Round Program

Mayor Mamdani announced the 2-K program will operate full-day, year-round from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 260 days per year.

The initial rollout will cover about 2,000 seats across five school districts.

Mamdani said, 'For many families working nine to five, an eight-to-three program isn't going to cut it.'

Schools Chancellor Samuels called it a historic moment.

The program is part of a broader push to guarantee childcare for all New Yorkers ages six weeks to five years.

The extended schedule is designed to cover a full workday and reduce the need for additional care.

The traditional school calendar leaves families without childcare during summer break.

Mamdani said the expanded schedule could save working parents at least $20,000 per child.

The city has started notifying contracted providers.

Providers may still offer 2-K on the traditional school calendar.

The 2-K expansion is funded through a $1.2 billion child care investment.

Hochul gave Mamdani $73 million and $425 million in state funding for the first two years.

The mayor also announced a childcare provider map and online resource hub.

Hochul has been politically aligned with the city's new progressive mayor.

The city is encouraging families to complete the NYC Parent Survey.

The survey is designed to capture a representative cross-section of parents.
