Cohen described the moment as an unexpected text, saying, “Out of nowhere, when I was sitting with my wife at a restaurant, my phone buzzed and it was a text from that friend who expressed to me the president’s genuine empathy for the hell that I was being dragged through … I deeply appreciated that text,” and he said he then texted Trump to thank him.

Cohen said Trump replied “almost immediately” and told him it was “actually time for us to meet,” adding, “We both knew the cost of this war,” and that “the ice between us, it didn’t just melt, it broke.”

CNN reported Cohen told it the current state of their relationship is “cordial and growing,” and said the reconciliation began about half a year ago after an intermediary relayed a message from Trump that Cohen described as “genuine empathy.”

The text and the timing

Cohen told CNN that the reconciliation started with an unexpected text from someone he described as a “White House friend and an insider,” who relayed the president’s message about “the hell that I was being dragged through, yet again.”

On the “Cats & Cosby” show, Cohen said he “thanked him, expressed my sincere hope that this long exhausting feud between the two of us could finally end,” and that Trump agreed “almost immediately” that it was “actually time for us to meet.”

CNN said the meeting “doesn’t seem to have happened yet,” and reported Cohen told it he would ask Trump’s permission and hopes “to return to the White House for a one-on-one visit in the next few weeks.”

The Washington Examiner said Cohen described the far left as having “brought back the relationship” roughly six months ago, and quoted him saying, “Out of nowhere, when I was sitting with my wife at a restaurant, my phone buzzed.”

Backstory and what Cohen says

Cohen’s account of the road to reconciliation, as described by the Washington Examiner, pointed to January outreach from Trump after Cohen announced that he “felt compelled and coerced” by New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to testify against Trump.

The Washington Examiner reported Cohen wrote that prosecutors were interested only in testimony that would enable them to convict President Trump, and it quoted his description that he felt “pressured and coerced to only provide information and testimony that would satisfy the government’s desire to build the cases against and secure a judgment and convictions against President Trump.”

CNN said Cohen testified against Trump during his trial involving a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election, and CNN reported Trump called Cohen a “liar” at the time.

The Hill reported Cohen also distanced Trump from convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and quoted Trump’s denial: “I never once witnessed, I never heard of, I never saw, I never communicated, never saw in the office Jeffrey Epstein.”
