NATO accelerates anti-drone
NATO will “metterà in atto una serie di ulteriori misure anti-droni” to strengthen, extend and accelerate its ability to counter “questa minaccia,” with Secretary General Mark Rutte speaking after a meeting of the Defense Ministers.
“NATO chief says alliance 'already benefits' from Türkiye's defense industry Rutte cites ASELSAN as one example among thousands of Turkish defense firms, says Türkiye's role in alliance is 'really important' Beril Canakci and Muhammed Yasin Gungor 06 July 2026•Update: 06 July 2026 ANKARA NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday said NATO is already benefiting from Türkiye's defense industrial output, describing ASELSAN as one example among roughly 3,000 defense companies operating in the country”
Rutte said “continueremo a imparare dalla cooperazione con l’Ucraina” and described NATO’s strategy as relying on “cicli rigorosi e ripetuti di test, prove ed esercitazioni” plus common procurement mechanisms for rapid access to effective technologies.
The NATO chief framed Russia’s drone activity as evidence of the need for deterrence and defense, saying European airspace violations by unmanned aircraft “hanno messo in evidenza l’efficacia della nostra postura di deterrenza e difesa.”
In the same context, Rutte told reporters that “Molti sistemi di difesa aerea sono già stati forniti all’Ucraina” while adding that there are “tecnologie che solo gli Stati Uniti possono fornire, come ad esempio gli intercettori per i sistemi Patriot.”
Eunews also said the United States has resumed essential military support to Ukraine, with “già due miliardi di dollari impegnati,” and that “più della metà dei Paesi membri della Nato ha aderito” to the Purl Initiative to finance U.S.-provided equipment for Ukraine.
Rutte links Ukraine to China
On the eve of the NATO summit in Ankara, Mark Rutte warned that “we cannot be naive” about China after a long-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile launch in the South Pacific, telling reporters that NATO is “on it.”
Rutte connected the Indo-Pacific to the war in Ukraine, saying “we see it also in the war with Ukraine, where China, North Korea, and Iran are key enablers of Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine.”

The Nightly reported that China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said, “We hope relevant countries will not read too much into it,” while Pat Conroy described the missile launch as a “destabilising event” and said its timing was “more likely to be coincidental.”
TRT World said Rutte argued that NATO’s strategic compass is rebalancing beyond Europe, warning that it is “not sustainable that we ask a country with 350 million people” to defend against Russia while “600 million people” live in the rest of NATO territory.
In the same TRT World account, Rutte said Europe and Canada are already investing roughly “four percent of GDP” in defense and security, while NATO leaders agreed to work toward spending “5 percent by 2035” and he described the shift as “transformational.”
What NATO says is at stake
Rutte’s NATO message tied the alliance’s next steps to Ukraine’s battlefield needs and to the broader contest he described as involving China, North Korea, and Iran as “key enablers,” while also emphasizing that NATO is continuing to support Kyiv.

Eunews said Rutte told ministers that the 32 NATO allies “hanno ribadito che stanno aumentando gli investimenti nella difesa” by “potenziando la produzione nel settore della difesa” and “intensificando” support for Ukraine.
The Nightly reported that Rutte said NATO is already assessing what the United States can provide in a “two-theatre conflict,” and he argued that “already the Europeans are backfilling” as the alliance seeks a sustainable arrangement.
In parallel, TRT World said Rutte warned that China’s role is rising on NATO’s agenda and that “What happens in the Pacific is relevant to what is happening in the transatlantic,” reinforcing his view that developments affecting Russia’s war against Ukraine are not isolated to Europe.
Eunews added that Zelenskiy is expected to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday to “definire il futuro scenario del conflitto russo-ucraina,” as NATO’s defense posture and procurement plans move forward.
