Ceasefire, but fatalities
UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov told the UN Security Council that “Israeli airstrikes and military operations have continued across Gaza, resulting in further fatalities,” and said the total killed since the ceasefire has surpassed 1,000, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
“UN official warns over 'volatile' situation across occupied Palestinian territory despite ceasefire 'Israeli airstrikes and military operations have continued across Gaza, resulting in further fatalities,' says Ramiz Alakbarov Merve Gül Aydoğan Ağlarcı 29 June 2026•Update: 29 June 2026 A senior UN official warned on Monday that Israeli airstrikes and military operations have continued across the Gaza Strip, resulting in further fatalities, as the situation across the Occupied Palestinian Territory remained "volatile”
Alakbarov said Gaza still faces “profound uncertainty and immense human suffering,” while also stressing that the ceasefire announced eight months ago has not ended the violence.
He added that Israel currently controls approximately 70% of the Gaza Strip and continues to expand the scope of its territorial control, widening areas requiring coordination for humanitarian operations.
In the same briefing, Alakbarov condemned “the continued killing and injury of civilians in Gaza, including women and children,” and warned that increasing calls for a resumption of widespread hostilities would be “disastrous for the Palestinian people of Gaza, for Israelis and for the entire region.”
Security Council spotlight
At the UN Security Council’s open meeting, UN News said Israeli settlement activities in occupied Palestinian territory—declared illegal under a decade-old resolution—were under the spotlight, with updates from the office of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and two civil society representatives.
UN News also reported that a UN independent commission of inquiry said in its latest report released on Tuesday that Israeli authorities and security forces have deliberately targeted Palestinian children, resulting in genocide and atrocity crimes in the Gaza Strip and war crimes in the West Bank.

In his briefing, Alakbarov warned that the situation across the Occupied Palestinian Territory remained “volatile,” and he said intimidation during protests in Gaza on June 26 raised deep concern.
He further said “Civilians must be able to exercise their rights peacefully, without fear, and must be protected at all times,” while condemning “the continued killing and injury of civilians in Gaza, including women and children.”
Children, accountability, and risk
In Arab press coverage summarized by مونت كارلو الدولية, Al-Quds Al-Arabi framed Gaza’s children as “Gaza’s Forgotten Children in UN Security Council Deliberations,” citing UN reports that confirm Palestinian children being killed and injured, alongside hunger, displacement, denial of education and healthcare, and psychological trauma.

That same coverage said the UN report on children and armed conflict highlights rising violations against children worldwide, with Israel listed for the second year in a row among the parties violating children’s rights, and it added that the Gaza Strip accounted for the largest share of child casualties globally.
WAFA reported that Alakbarov briefed the 15-member Council on Monday on resolution 2334 and also focused on resolution 2803 (2025), through which the Council endorsed the United States-facilitated Comprehensive Peace Plan in Gaza in October 2025 and authorized the deployment of an international stabilization force.
Alakbarov stressed that “The legitimate needs, concerns and aspirations of the people of Gaza must be addressed through the full implementation of [that resolution],” while warning that “Instead, the situations in both Gaza and the West Bank have remained volatile.”
