Tuchel’s defensive turn
England’s World Cup ended in a 2-1 semifinal loss to Argentina in Atlanta after Thomas Tuchel shifted into a defensive posture late in the match, with Anthony Gordon scoring in the 55th minute before Enzo Fernández equalized in the 85th minute and Lautaro Martínez scored in the second minute of stoppage time.
“England's World Cup ends in heartbreak again, with questions being asked of its manager's decisions as Lionel Messi plotted Argentina's win and the Three Lions' demise”
Tuchel defended his approach by saying, "In this moment my feeling was no structure in the world could have helped," and he argued that England were "too passive" and "not physical enough" as Argentina kept runners arriving in the box.
Sky Sports reported that Tuchel insisted he was "100 per cent" committed to continuing his England role into the next European Championships in two years, while ESPN said he has a contract until Euro 2028 and vowed to stay on.
CBC described how Tuchel introduced defenders Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly to protect the lead as Argentina piled on pressure, and it noted that England had just 12% possession between Gordon’s goal and Argentina’s winner.
The match’s turning point came after Gordon’s goal, when Tuchel made changes including substituting Reece James for Dan Burn and Declan Rice for defender Nico O’Reilly in the 82nd minute, as England tried to build a wall in front of the goal.
Critics and defenders
Criticism of Tuchel’s tactics followed the defeat, with CBC quoting Thomas Müller saying, "I cannot understand to invite the whole Argentinean game to hit one cross after the other in perfect crossing positions, but no matter," after England surrendered a late 1-0 lead.
Rooney, speaking to the BBC, said, "You can't go a goal up and then surrender the ball and surrender any opportunity of trying to get the second goal," as former England captain Wayne Rooney added that Tuchel’s decisions had "cost us tonight."

Tuchel pushed back on the idea that his formation was the problem, telling reporters that the issue was English football’s "DNA" and that ball possession was "maybe not in our DNA" compared with "Spanish DNA" or "Argentinian-Brazilian DNA."
The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg wrote that some England players were "puzzled" by Tuchel overseeing a tactical capitulation, and it said there was "widespread surprise" that he did not use the pace of Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, or Marcus Rashford to hit Argentina on the break.
ESPN added that Tuchel said he believed his decisions were "just the nature of the game" and that "No one knows what would have happened if we made different decisions," while noting England’s captain Harry Kane said, "Once we went 1-0 up, we seemed to just try and hold on, which at this level is just not enough, so I'm gutted."
What comes next
With Argentina advancing to the World Cup final against Spain, England were left with the consolation of a third-place match against France in Miami Gardens, Florida, after Tuchel’s World Cup exit in Atlanta.
“England desperately wanted to protect its lead as time was winding down in the World Cup semifinals, and coach Thomas Tuchel made lineup and strategy changes to build a wall in front of the goal”
ESPN reported that Tuchel agreed to a contract extension with the Football Association that ties him to the role until after Euro 2028, and it said he has vowed to stay on despite the semifinal loss.
Tuchel’s postmatch stance included his insistence that the players were "too passive" and that "we couldn't find any duels anymore; that's why we dropped deeper and deeper," while he also pointed to physical strain from playing in heat and at altitude.
The Guardian’s Steinberg argued that the postmortem went deeper than the end result, saying England had "never any flow or identity" and that Tuchel "veered away from his plan" by showing no faith in Saka’s fitness.
As the tournament closed, ABC noted that England’s first yellow card came when Elliot Anderson was booked, and it said Argentina’s comeback was driven by Messi’s playmaking before Lautaro Martínez sealed the win with a header in stoppage time.
