Key Takeaways

  • A 14-point framework to end the Iran conflict was released by the White House.
  • Switzerland signing ceremony planned, potentially with presidents signing the MOU.
  • Details remain unclear ahead of signing; Trump says the deal will be signed soon.

14 points, frozen assets

The Trump administration released the text of its 14-point agreement with Iran, saying it was a “major win” for the United States while it made political and financial concessions to reopen the strait of Hormuz and prevent a “worldwide depression”.

Donald Trump said the alternative to the deal would be a “worldwide depression” and argued that if he had not struck a deal, “the strait [of Hormuz] would never have been opened.”

The agreement includes a pledge to discuss down-blending Iran’s 440kg stockpile of highly enriched uranium, and a senior administration official said, “At a minimum, the enriched stockpile will be destroyed by down-blending.”

He also said the deal would formally be signed “shortly,” and the text was hailed by Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem as a “great victory,” while Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf called it “a record of US failure.”

Signing venue and Israel

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the idea of a signing ceremony involving Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump “is on the table” and that there had been “no changes” to Tehran’s plans for the Switzerland meeting scheduled for Friday.

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs announced that the memorandum of understanding would be signed on Friday, June 19, at the Bürgenstock resort in the canton of Nidwalden, with Switzerland acting as a mediator after contact with the United States, Iran, Pakistan, and Qatar.

In parallel, CBS News reported that Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said any Israeli forces remaining in southern Lebanon or any Israeli strikes on the country would constitute a violation of the U.S.-Iran deal, while Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said, “Trump's agreement does not bind us.”

CBS News also said a signing ceremony is expected Friday in Switzerland to formalize the memorandum of understanding and that the negotiations on a final settlement are set to begin Friday at Switzerland's Burgenstock mountain resort after the memorandum is formally signed.

Nuclear talks, 60 days

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty said senior US officials disclosed that the memorandum of understanding envisages ending the fighting on all fronts, including in Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic, and ending the US naval blockade on Iran, with the deal set to be officially signed during a ceremony in Switzerland on June 19.

It also reported that after officially signing the deal, the two sides commit to agreeing to a final settlement in 60 days that includes limits to Iran’s nuclear program and the removal of US sanctions on the Islamic republic, and quoted a senior US official saying, “This is fundamentally an agreement that allows us to open the Strait of Hormuz immediately.”

NPR reported that Iran says the memorandum of understanding is a 1 1/2-page document and that after it is signed on Friday, the two sides will sit down for talks on Iran's nuclear program and U.S. sanctions, with Vance facing Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

NPR added that Iran insists any ceasefire agreement has to include Israel's war in Lebanon against the Iran-backed Hezbollah, and it cited a warning from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard that if Israel does not stop those attacks in Lebanon, it should expect a harsh response from Iran.
