G7, mines, and a truce

President Donald Trump arrived in France for the Group of Seven summit on Monday as the Trump administration announced the signing of a truce with Iran, with the president saying the deal is "all signed" and that the Strait of Hormuz is "already partially opened."

Trump told allies the United States would not need "much help" in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as he attended a G7 summit meeting in Evian-les-Bains hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

A senior administration official said Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf all signed the deal, and the CBS News report said the signing of the memorandum is expected to kick off 60 days of negotiations for a final deal.

The CBS News report also said Trump began a bilateral meeting with Macron and that the president said they would be "doing a little hunting" for mines in the strait to make sure it's safe for ships.

Macron’s conditions and timing

Macron congratulated Trump on the memorandum signing and, as Trump began bilateral talks, the CBS News report said the text of the deal may not be released until "after sometime after Friday," which is the day the signing ceremony is expected to take place.

In Evian-les-Bains, Trump said the Strait of Hormuz will be "completely opened" on Friday while speaking alongside Macron, and he also said the strait is "already partially opened."

The New York Post reported that Macron is ready to help Trump with Iran but has one condition first — confirmation of the ceasefire deal in writing — and it quoted him saying, "The Charles de Gaulle, with everything surrounding it and remaining in the area, can be deployed within two or three days following confirmation."

The New York Post also reported confusion over when the terms of the deal will be released, quoting Trump that "Probably pretty soon. I would say sometime after Friday," even as officials told the paper that G7 leaders had not seen the text of the MOU.

Who joins, what’s at stake

The Scripps News report said the United States is attempting to broker a peace deal with Iran and that among the topics for Trump’s three-day meeting with leaders of the Group of Seven will be efforts to include allies such as France and the United Kingdom in demining the Strait of Hormuz.

Scripps News also said the White House is optimistic about a potential agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and it quoted the senior Trump administration official saying, "There’s a coalition that the U.K. and France have talked about."

The DW report said Trump told reporters he hoped to publish the terms of its deal with Iran "in the very near future," but not until a signing ceremony set for Friday, and it added that Trump said there would be no sanctions relief for Iran "until they do what they are supposed to do."

As the CBS News report described lingering questions, it said the memorandum is expected to kick off 60 days of negotiations for a final deal while leaders weigh how to extract and destroy the enriched uranium still in Iran's possession and how inspections in Iran might take place.
