Trump Extends D.C. National Guard Deployment Through January 2029, Marshals Report 16,000 Arrests

A year after President Donald Trump declared a “crime emergency” in Washington, D.C. and deployed the National Guard as part of the “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force,” the mission has been extended through January 2029, with armed troops still patrolling streets and transit hubs.

The deployment began with roughly 800 National Guard troops mobilized in August 2025, and it expanded to thousands of troops from states and territories, with ABC News describing a force that reached roughly 5,000 during a “summer surge” for America 250 before settling lower.

The cost is projected at $1.4 billion through the end of Trump’s term, while the Defense Department estimates an average of 2,500 National Guard personnel will remain in Washington through January 2029.

In parallel, the U.S. Marshals Service reported over 16,000 arrests since the surge began, including 35 homicide suspects and more than 3,200 people on narcotics charges, and authorities also seized nearly 2,000 illegal firearms.

Even as residents debate the necessity of the deployment, the White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said, “President Trump has transformed D.C. from a crime-ridden city into a safe and beautiful haven for residents and visitors alike.”

Residents and advocacy groups marked the one-year anniversary with protests near the White House, including the Free D.C. movement’s pushback against what it described as a “12-month-long occupation by the National Guard.”

At a park in Washington, D.C., NPR quoted Joseph Nunn warning, “Armed military personnel standing on the street corners in an American city should never be normal.”

D.C. residents also described feeling less safe with troops present, with Dina Lewis of Le Droit Park telling WTOP, “I do not. I feel more afraid because they’re carrying weapons and they’re armed and they’re in the military.”

Legal challenges have also continued, with Al Jazeera reporting that on September 4, DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb sued the Trump administration over the deployment and that a federal appeals court later granted a stay as litigation continued.

In response to the legality questions, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said, “We use the Guard to respond to emergencies. We use the Guard for large-scale events. We do not use the Guard to police our local laws,” at a DC conference in October.

Supporters of the federal crackdown point to crime and enforcement figures, including WJLA’s reporting that MPD data showed overall crime decreased by 20% and that homicides are down 32 percent, robbery is down 15 percent, and car theft is down 53 percent.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office also credited the broader federal law enforcement surge with declines, with DC News Now reporting homicides have fallen 45%, carjackings 64%, robberies 33% and motor vehicle thefts 53% during the year since the federal surge began compared with the previous year.

But critics and some residents argue the deployment’s impact is unclear and that the presence of armed troops is itself a risk, with Al Jazeera quoting Richard Hahn saying, “They’re not trained police officers,” and adding that the “best thing a National Guard member can be” is “a sentinel.”

The next phase is also being signaled by the D.C. National Guard, with DC News Now reporting Brig. Gen. Leland D. Blanchard II saying, “We’re going to expand our footprint,” as the deployment marks one year.

Meanwhile, the stakes for local autonomy and governance remain central to the debate, with AP quoting Scott Michelman saying, “There’s a deep irony that here we are in the capital of the free world, and our president is treating it like a police state.”
