Hormuz talks and threats

Five months into the war with Iran, Donald Trump faced a challenge different from what the United States and Israel expected when they launched their attack on 28 February, because the U.S. still had the capability to inflict devastating damage but had not found a way to end the war as a clear American victory.

Trump once again threatened massive military strikes before postponing them.

Trump warned the United States was prepared to launch another attack on Iran, then on Saturday night announced the operation would be postponed if a swift agreement could be reached on the “immediate, full and complete” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the elimination of what he described as the “Iranian nuclear threat”.

The same account said Trump had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman shortly beforehand, and that Gulf-state pressure played a significant role in the decision to refrain from launching another major military operation.

The reporting also described a competing set of narratives, with Trump claiming an “all-day negotiation” with Iran had taken place on Tuesday and Tehran questioning whether direct talks were taking place at all.

Iran’s conditions for reopening

Iran’s position was framed as conditional and uncompromising, with CBS News reporting that Iran said the Strait of Hormuz would not open until the U.S. “corrects” behavior.

CBS News also said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told that talks with Oman were “approaching the final stages,” while cautioning that “this is not a sign of the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.”

In the same CBS News roundup, Trump said the U.S. was “semi-negotiating” with Iran and told Axios during a phone interview that the U.S. was “just watching Iran with its huge inflation and the fact they have no money.”

DW Persian News Desk reported Trump’s response to Tehran’s compensation demand, writing that he referred to Iran’s demand as “An interesting idea,” adding that Iran should also pay damages.

Mecca pact and U.S. pressure

Beyond the Strait of Hormuz negotiations, Yaffa News Network said U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson described the signing of the “Mecca Agreement” between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan as “another achievement” for President Donald Trump.

Yaffa News Network reported Wilson said the agreement came amid what he described as “prosperous Gulf allies, a liberated Syria, and Lebanese-Israeli negotiations,” and that it reflected the “isolation of the Iranian regime.”

In the CBS News roundup, GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana said Trump needs to “come out and speak forcefully on what the path forward is” in Iran after diplomatic efforts collapsed and hostilities resumed.

The DW Persian News Desk account also said Trump posted that “I have instructed my representatives to press this matter decisively in any future negotiation,” tying compensation demands to future talks and to deaths and damages linked to Iran-led conflicts.
