Key Takeaways
- Trump rejected Iran's latest response to the U.S. peace proposal.
- Ceasefire is on life support following Trump's rejection of Iran's proposal.
- Tehran had not yet responded to the latest U.S. peace proposal.
Ceasefire on life support
The United States and Iran remained at an impasse after President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s latest response to a US peace proposal, with Trump saying the ceasefire was “on life support” and “unbelievably weak.”
Trump also called Iran’s proposal “garbage” and said he did not like it after he had earlier posted “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” on Truth Social.

Iran’s Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei accused the U.S. of “one-sided views” and “making unreasonable” and “excessive demands,” while saying Iran’s offer included stopping “maritime piracy against Iranian ships.”
Tehran’s position was also reflected in the Iranian Foreign Affairs Ministry’s response to the latest US peace proposal, as it called for an end to the conflict and the release of its frozen assets while insisting it was only seeking its “legitimate rights.”
Nuclear escalation threat
As diplomacy stalled, Iran’s parliamentary national security and foreign policy commission spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei said Tehran could enrich uranium up to 90 per cent purity if the country is attacked again, writing, "One of Iran's options in the event of another attack could be 90 percent enrichment."
Rezaei added, "We will review it in the parliament," linking the enrichment option to a future attack rather than the current ceasefire talks.

NBC News reported that Trump accused Iranian leaders of agreeing to hand over their enriched uranium before they went back on the offer, and Trump said, “Two days ago, they said, ‘You’re going to have to take it,’” before they changed their mind.
In parallel, Al Jazeera reported that Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iranian forces are ready to retaliate if attacked, warning the US would be “surprised” by its response.
Stakes: sanctions and Hormuz
The dispute over the Strait of Hormuz remained central to the pressure campaign, with the Independent describing Iran’s latest Iranian response as focusing on ending the double blockade around the Strait of Hormuz and lifting American sanctions.
“Trump says ceasefire is on 'life support' after rejecting Iran's latest proposal Tensions between the United States and Iran remain high as Tehran warned it was prepared to respond to “any aggression” after US President Donald Trump said the fragile ceasefire was on “massive life support””
NBC News said the rising price of oil, with Brent crude at $104 a barrel at noon, formed a tense backdrop for Trump’s state visit to China, as the ceasefire’s fragility continued to raise concerns over shipping.
Al Jazeera reported that the UK and France would host defence ministers from 40 countries to discuss plans to restore trade flows through the Strait of Hormuz, while the U.S. sanctioned 12 people and entities over Iranian oil sales to China.
The same Al Jazeera update said the U.S. and UK sanctions came hours after similar UK measures, and it framed the exchange as deepening uncertainty around efforts to secure a diplomatic breakthrough to end a war that has triggered a global energy crisis.
