Those sources also said the proposal included a clause related to a ceasefire in Lebanon that they described as one of Tehran’s “red lines.”

The Media Line added that the US position called for free passage through the waterway and a halt to Iran’s uranium enrichment, while Iran proposed that further negotiations continue in writing through Pakistan.

In the same reporting, a senior Iranian official told Al Jazeera that Tehran’s response was “realistic and positive,” adding that it focused on ending the war across the region, “especially in Lebanon,” while resolving disagreements with Washington.

Lebanon in the crossfire

On Thursday, the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, Brigadier General Esmail Qaani, threatened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the latest Israeli military escalation against Lebanon, with Tasnim News Agency reporting that Qaani described Netanyahu as the criminal and child killer.

The same report said the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that continued Israeli strikes pose a grave risk to the ceasefire agreement and to international efforts aimed at achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region, renewing his call for an immediate halt to hostilities.

It also said the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the escalation of Israeli attacks, describing it as worsening the already dire humanitarian situation in Lebanon, and urged the international community to take immediate action to protect civilians and halt hostilities.

According to the Lebanese Civil Defense as cited in the report, Israel carried out a wide series of airstrikes in southern Lebanon, extending to the Beqaa, Beirut, and Mount Lebanon, killing 254 people and injuring 1,165.

The report further stated that Hezbollah responded to Israeli strikes by launching the first direct rocket attack on northern Israel since the announced temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran, and that Israel’s Home Front Command said rockets were launched from Lebanese territory toward the Upper Galilee.

Negotiations and competing ceasefire terms

Lebanon remained central to the diplomatic track as Monte Carlo Internationale reported that a U.S. State Department official said the department will host a meeting next week to discuss ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Lebanon.
