Key Takeaways
- Trump says ceasefire with Iran is over as U.S. launches new strikes.
- Strikes target Iran to degrade its ability to disrupt Strait of Hormuz shipping.
- Escalation follows Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Ceasefire declared over
President Donald Trump said the ceasefire with Iran was “over” as the U.S. launched more strikes against Iran to “further degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” according to U.S. Central Command.
CNN reported that Trump warned on social media that strikes would “get much worse” if Tehran attacked more ships in the strait, after Iran’s deputy foreign minister called Trump a “criminal.”

Iranian state media reported explosions in several cities, including Bushehr, Bandar Abbas and Sirik, while the AP said the U.S. carried out another round of strikes on Wednesday hours after Trump said the end of the fragile ceasefire.
The AP said the latest strikes raised fears the war could reignite, coming just a day after the U.S. military hit a variety of military sites and port facilities following Iran’s targeting of several merchant vessels off the coast of Oman.
Warnings and counterclaims
Trump posted a warning that “This is in retribution for yesterday’s bombing of ships by Iran. If it happens again, it will get much worse!” as the U.S. announced additional strikes, according to the AP.
The AP also reported that Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi retorted on X that Trump’s remarks “are not a sign of power but an admission of the failure” of U.S. policy toward Iran.

CBS News said Trump told reporters that “as far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” and described his view that dealing with Iran was “a waste of time dealing with” the Iranian side.
The Guardian reported that Trump said his negotiators “can talk, but I think they’re wasting their time … They’re a bunch of liars … They’re liars, they’re cheaters, they’re sick people.”
What’s at stake next
The U.S. strikes were framed as an effort to keep the Strait of Hormuz open to traffic, with the AP warning that a renewed conflict could engulf the wider Middle East and likely halt energy shipments through the strait.
“The United States military has said it is conducting another wave of strikes on Iran, a day after launching another round of attacks”
CNN said a U.S. official told CNN’s Pamela Brown that the ceasefire with Iran “has at least temporarily ceased,” while the official also said the situation “continues to be very dynamic” and more strikes could follow.
The Guardian reported that the U.S. Treasury revoked a temporary sanctions waiver for Tehran to export oil, and that Iran responded by attacking U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.
DW said Pakistan called for restraint and urged “all parties to exercise restraint,” while the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for de-escalation and a resumption of talks, warning to “avoid any further escalatory action” and “take immediate steps to de-escalate.”
