Novorossiysk Strike
Ukraine launched a major strike on Russia’s Black Sea port city of Novorossiysk, hitting warships at a naval base and forcing two major grain terminals to halt operations, according to Russian and Ukrainian officials and grain industry sources.

Reuters reported that the attack killed at least two people, including an 8-year-old child, and that Ukraine’s SBU said Kyiv hit the Novorossiysk naval base with drones and missiles.
BBC said three people, including an eight-year-old child, were killed and another 24 injured in the overnight attack, with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky describing the operation as a “unique operation” even though he did not mention grain terminals being hit.
In the same Reuters account, Zelenskiy said two frigates, a large landing ship, a corvette and other vessels were hit, while Russia’s agriculture ministry said it was working to redirect export flows to alternative routes.
The BBC also reported that Ukraine’s military later said four Russian warships, including two frigates, were hit, as Russia had not commented on the issue.
Competing Claims
Zelensky said Kyiv launched rockets, jet and naval drones in a “unique operation” to strike the Russian base, and he posted that “The occupying fleet and all the infrastructure that supports it will not be safe as long as Russian aggression continues,” according to the BBC.
Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine of carrying out strikes on Russian grain and agricultural infrastructure, resulting in a hike in global food prices and growing grain shortages, and she said Russia would continue striking “facilities that [Ukraine's armed forces] use on the Black Sea to destabilise the navigation situation”.
Reuters described Ukraine’s attack as having “strategic significance,” citing the SBU’s claim that Kyiv’s forces hit the Novorossiysk naval base with drones and missiles.
The BBC framed the grain-terminal damage as part of a “massive” Ukrainian drone and missile strike that damaged two major grain export terminals and hit the last big Russian naval base on the Black Sea, while Reuters emphasized the halt in operations for two major grain terminals.
In the Reuters report, Novorossiysk Mayor Andrei Kravchenko said the port suspended its water supply and declared an emergency after the strikes, with four enterprises, more than two dozen residential buildings and some educational facilities damaged.
Food Markets at Risk
The disruption in Novorossiysk raised fears of a disruption to global supplies, with Reuters linking the grain-terminal strikes to Russia being the world’s largest wheat exporter and noting Chicago wheat futures rose around 3% on Wednesday.

CNBC reported that Russia warned the attack would prompt a disruption to global food supplies, while Russia’s Agriculture Ministry said it was seeking to redirect cargo flows to ports in the Baltic and Caspian Seas as well as land routes.
CNBC also said Russia appeared to be on track to export between 3 million and 3.4 million metric tons of wheat this month, far below the five-year August average of 5 million tons, and that it could represent the lowest August total since the 2016-2017 agricultural season.
The BBC added that an emergency situation was declared in the city on Wednesday after the barrage of drones struck areas around the port and damaged pipelines, suspending water supply for the city, while regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said several locations in the surrounding Krasnodar region were struck by “several hundred drones.”
Reuters further tied the broader stakes to maritime trade, saying Novorossiysk hosts oil export infrastructure including for the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, and it noted a Financial Times report that Ukraine agreed not to target CPC infrastructure and non-Russian vessels after a request from U.S. Vice President JD Vance in late July.
