Sevastopol blackout after strikes

Ukrainian drone strikes knocked out power in Sevastopol, Russia’s largest city in Crimea, after Kyiv said its drones hit the city’s main power substation overnight.

Moscow-installed Sevastopol governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said the attack left the city temporarily without electricity and warned that some areas would be left without power until Wednesday evening.

The BBC reported that explosions were heard in Bakhchisarai, Kerch, and near Mount Ai-Petri, where the radio engineering battalion of the Russian Aerospace Forces is based.

Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces commander Robert Brovdi said the main power substation of Sevastopol had been hit during the attacks, and the BBC said the port city is an important logistical and strategic location.

The BBC also said Kyiv has been intensifying attacks on power facilities in areas held by Russia to damage oil revenues and try to force President Putin to the negotiating table.

Voices urge restraint

Razvozhayev told residents to conserve their mobile phone battery by turning the screen brightness down and switching off background apps, and he urged people to check on elderly neighbours throughout the day.

In a Telegram message, Razvozhayev said, "We will not be intimidated by the lack of light. We have gone through more than that, and we will survive now," as the BBC described a special regime at the energy facilities while damage was assessed.

The BBC reported that Brovdi said on Wednesday drones had targeted 48 operational and planned military sites, and that explosions were also heard in Bakhchisarai, Kerch and near Mount Ai-Petri.

The BBC added that Russia’s defence ministry said it destroyed over 300 drones from Ukraine overnight, while Kyiv’s air force said Moscow launched 101 drones at Ukraine overnight and 95 were destroyed.

The Kyiv Independent said the Security Service of Ukraine and Special Operations Forces reported strikes on Russian air defense systems and military airfield infrastructure in occupied Crimea on June 24, including damage to four aircraft storage hangars at the Saky military airfield.

Fuel sales suspended, pressure grows

The BBC said the blackout came amid fuel shortages in Sevastopol after intense efforts by Ukraine to isolate the peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014, and it reported that on Sunday Sergei Aksyonov announced all petrol sales had been suspended.

The BBC reported that petrol was mostly reserved for government services, while local residents said garages did have supplies in their tanks, and it described panic-buying starting in some shops with sugar said to be in especially short supply.

The Taipei Times said Crimea has been forced to suspend fuel sales to the public as Ukraine’s army targets Russian logistics to the region, and it said Ukraine’s increasing use of long-range strikes has highlighted its ability to inflict painful damage on Russia.

The Taipei Times also quoted Razvozhayev writing on social media that, "The enemy is once again striking treacherously, attempting to deprive us of normal living conditions and sow panic," as Kyiv said its forces struck a railway bridge, a power plant and other key infrastructure targets in Crimea.

The Taipei Times reported that Ukraine’s defense ministry said drones struck an oil storage depot at the Kerch thermal power plant in eastern Crimea, an electrical substation in the west, and a liquefied natural gas distribution station in Simferopol.
