US intelligence assessments cited by CNN say Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is playing a crucial role in shaping the country’s war strategy and helping direct negotiations with Washington despite remaining out of public view after injuries sustained during the war.

The reports say Khamenei has not been seen in public since he sustained serious injuries during an attack that killed his father and several of the country’s top military leaders at the beginning of the war, and US intelligence has not been able to visually confirm his whereabouts.
CNN reports that part of the uncertainty stems from Khamenei not using any electronics to communicate, instead only interacting with those who can visit him in-person or by sending messages via a courier.
The same CNN reporting says the Trump administration continues to pursue a diplomatic end to the conflict as a ceasefire stretches past a month, with US intelligence assessing that Iran continues to dig out from the US bombing campaign that left significant Iranian military capabilities intact.
CNN also reports that Mazaher Hosseini, head of protocol in the office of Iran’s supreme leader, said on Friday that Khamenei is healing from his injuries and “is now in complete health.”
Hosseini denies rumors
Iranian officials have rejected speculation about Khamenei’s condition, with Mazaher Hosseini telling a crowd in Iran, “Thank God, he is in good health,” and adding that “He will speak to you when the time is right.”
The Diplomatic Insight, citing a CNN report, says Iranian officials stated that he is recovering and “remains active in leadership affairs,” while US intelligence sources assess he is believed to have continued operating through trusted intermediaries.
CNN reports that Hosseini said Khamenei’s foot and lower back were slightly injured and that “a small piece of shrapnel had hit him behind the ear,” but that the wounds are healing.
CNN also reports that the Trump administration’s challenge is tied to uncertainty about who holds negotiating authority, because US officials say it remains unclear who currently holds the authority to conduct negotiations to end the war.
In a separate account, La Voce di New York says Hosseini dismissed speculation and quoted him saying, “The enemy is spreading all kinds of rumors and false claims.”
Negotiations and blockade
US intelligence assessments described by CNN say Iran’s military capabilities have been degraded but not destroyed, and that roughly half of Iran’s missile launchers had survived US strikes before a later report increased that figure to two thirds.

The Diplomatic Insight says the intelligence assessment also suggests that while Iranian military capabilities have been degraded by recent US strikes, they have not been fully neutralized, and that a significant number of missile systems and launch platforms are still believed to be operational.
CNN reports that US and Iranian military forces have traded shots in recent days despite an ongoing ceasefire, as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has come to a near stop with both sides claiming control of the waterway.
In the same CNN reporting, a senior intelligence official is quoted saying, “The President’s blockade is inflicting real, compounding damage—severing trade, crushing revenue, and accelerating systemic economic collapse.”
