U.S. Strikes Iran After Trump Says Ceasefire Is Over, Iran Attacks US Allies

The United States and Iran traded new attacks after President Donald Trump said the ceasefire was “over,” with the U.S. military saying it hit “approximately 90 Iranian military targets” across Iran on Wednesday following Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

NBC News reported that Tehran retaliated with attacks on U.S. allies across the Middle East that sparked alerts in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and hours later in Jordan, as both sides accused each other of violating the terms of their interim deal.

The NBC News account said the U.S. strikes targeted places that were allowing the IRGC to resupply locations and reconstitute their attacks, while Iranian state media reported multiple explosions in cities across the country’s south.

NBC News also reported that the Foreign Ministry denounced Wednesday’s strikes as a “grave war crime,” saying they targeted civilian infrastructure including two railway bridges.

The exchange left the peace process in limbo as Trump and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June that kicked off a 60-day negotiating period toward a final deal to end the conflict, with talks paused this week as Iran held massive funeral events for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

BBC reported that Trump told reporters at a Nato summit in Turkey that the US “hit them very hard last night” and would “probably hit them hard again tonight,” while he accused Tehran of violating an interim deal signed in June that called for an end to the conflict.

In response, BBC said Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X: “We do not answer vulgarity with vulgarity, but with action: fearlessly and with great valour.”

RFE/RL reported that CENTCOM posted on X a “fact check” on July 9, reiterating that “Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz,” and adding that since early May U.S. forces helped facilitate the successful transit of more than 800 commercial vessels and 380 million barrels of crude oil.

RFE/RL also said Iranian state media reported a “US-Israeli projectile” hit a military headquarters on the outskirts of Bushehr, while American officials denied that US forces were carrying out attacks at the time.

BBC said the MoU included 14 points, including a 60-day period for a ceasefire during which negotiations should continue, safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, and the US lifting sanctions on Iran.

NBC News said the bridges attacked in the south lay on the route to Mashhad, where officials plan to bury Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday, and it reported that videos geolocated by NBC News showed a damaged railway bridge in Golestan province between Tehran and Mashhad.

NBC News reported that the Iranian Health Ministry said at least 14 people were killed and another 78 wounded in the two days of U.S. attacks, while it also said there was no immediate response to the Iranian accusations from the Pentagon.

RFE/RL reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi discussed the latest developments in the region, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, in calls with counterparts and officials from Pakistan, Turkey, and Oman, and that Pakistan and Oman had been acting as mediators in negotiations between Washington and Tehran in recent weeks.

NBC Boston reported that the U.S. carried out another round of strikes on Wednesday, with military officials saying the strikes were intended to “further degrade” Iran’s ability “to threaten freedom of navigation” in the strait.

NBC Boston said the renewed exchange raised fears that the war in Iran could reignite and that Trump’s comments added new uncertainty, with oil prices shot up after he spoke and the interim agreement to pause fighting described as “over.”
