U.S. Strikes Iran’s Coast Along Strait of Hormuz After Trump Says Truce Is Over

U.S. forces hit 90 targets overnight, mostly along Iran’s coastline with the Strait of Hormuz, after President Donald Trump said he thought a tentative truce was “over.”

Iran responded by launching a barrage of drones and missiles at Jordan and countries in the Persian Gulf, as the tit-for-tat strikes continued into Thursday.

CBS News reported that Iran launched more missiles at U.S. allies Thursday and said at least 14 people were killed in escalating strikes, while the funeral procession for Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took place Thursday and he was later buried in Mashhad.

The BBC said Iran launched more strikes after explosions were reported in southern Iran, with Iran saying 14 people had been killed in the past two days and Iran’s health ministry saying 14 people were killed and 78 people injured across five provinces.

U.S. Central Command said the latest strikes were intended to “further degrade Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping and innocent civilian mariners” in the Strait of Hormuz.

As Khamenei was laid to rest in Mashhad after a multiday state funeral, CBS News said Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Aragchi condemned the U.S. strikes in a call with Pakistan’s chief of the army and said the remarks rejecting commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum showed “continued treaty violations and warmongering policies.”

In the same CBS News coverage, President Trump said Iran “wants to make a deal so badly,” while also threatening “much worse” strikes if Iran attacks ships again.

The BBC reported that Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on X that America “still hasn’t learned that bullying and breaking promises are no longer cost-free,” adding that the Strait of Hormuz will only open under Iranian arrangements—not “American threats.”

The Guardian also quoted Israel’s defence minister Israel Katz saying his country was prepared to resume its military campaign against Iran “with even greater force,” and said “the army is ready and on alert for a resumption of fighting.”

CNN described the escalation as a second day of U.S. and Iran trading strikes after Trump said the ceasefire was “over,” with CENTCOM saying U.S. forces struck “90 Iranian military targets” along the coastlines.

The BBC said Phil Belcher, marine director at Intertanko, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that the number of ships travelling through the Strait via the southern route was now in “single figures,” down from about 70 a week ago and well below the normal number of 130 ships seen before the Iran war began earlier this year.

CBS News reported that U.S. Central Command said that since early May, U.S. forces have helped more than 800 commercial vessels and 380 million barrels of crude oil transit the strait, while Lloyd’s List found strait traffic had “fallen sharply” since the two sides began exchanging strikes Tuesday.

The Guardian said Iran’s response included retaliatory strikes against what it described as U.S. bases across the Gulf, including in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan, while Israel’s Katz warned of a possible “third time if necessary.”

Fox News reported that regional mediators including Qatar and Pakistan were working to de-escalate tensions and revive negotiations on a nuclear deal, and that a U.S. official told Fox News on Thursday that “technical talks continue.”

The Washington Post framed the immediate stakes as renewed strikes after Trump said the truce was “over,” while Iran’s actions against commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz were treated by the U.S. as terrorism and tied to the performance-based 60-day ceasefire.
