Key Takeaways

  • Civilians in Gaza continue to be killed after the October 10 ceasefire.
  • The ceasefire has not halted the humanitarian catastrophe, with cold, hunger, and disease persisting.
  • The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights concluded the truce failed to stem civilian casualties.

Ceasefire, still dying

In Gaza, despite the October 10 ceasefire, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that more than 600 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,600 injured since the ceasefire came into effect, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Türk said at least 80 Palestinians have been killed by Hamas, mostly during extrajudicial executions or clashes with rival factions, and he described the situation as an ongoing acute humanitarian crisis.

He said Gaza would now have the highest number of amputees per capita in the world, and he directly blamed Israel's restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Türk added that since the ceasefire, Israel continues to hinder the ability of the humanitarian community to deliver food, shelter, fuel, medical supplies, and other essential items, and he said at least 11 children have died of hypothermia.

International justice under pressure

Türk said the UN denounces pressure exerted on international bodies investigating violations, including targeted sanctions imposed since 2025 by the U.S. administration on several judges and prosecutors of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

He said, "Unilateral sanctions imposed on 11 judges and prosecutors of the International Criminal Court are completely unacceptable," and he added that the same applies to sanctions imposed on the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory.

The UN News report also described how the United States imposed sanctions on Francesca Albanese in July 2025 after she urged the International Criminal Court to examine the responsibility of public and private actors in alleged human rights violations related to the Gaza conflict.

At a press briefing in Geneva, the Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, denounced personal vendettas against independent experts and rejected calls for Ms. Albanese's resignation following the publication of an online video that distorted, in his view, her remarks on Israel.

Ukraine war in the frame

El Mundo linked the changing character of conflict to the war in Ukraine, saying UN Secretary-General António Guterres confirmed that violence is increasing in quantity and magnitude and also in complexity.

The article described how, in Guterres's view, the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan are among the affected scenarios, and it enumerated seven major threats including wars and impunity.

El Mundo then turned to Russia's actions on European territory, saying a Russian drone struck a residential building in the early hours of Friday in Galati, Romania, wounding a 14-year-old boy and a 53-year-old woman.

It also cited May 14, when Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina announced her resignation after Ukrainian drones diverted by Russia crossed Latvia's airspace and reached some oil facilities, and it said the fuel tanks they struck were empty.
