This article can be challenged with ITV News's editorial-standards team.

  • Amend the headline to name the agent performing the summoning and to reflect the underlying conduct under scrutiny, for example: "UK summons top Israeli diplomat over video showing detainees being mistreated."
  • Amend the sentence "More than 400 people have been detained following the attempt" to identify by name the party responsible for the detentions, consistent with attribution already present elsewhere in the article.

Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir drew international condemnation after sharing footage taunting international activists detained in Israel following their attempt to break the country's blockade of Gaza on an aid flotilla. Israel's chargé d'affaires Daniela Grudsky Ekstein was summoned to the Foreign Office on Thursday. Israeli minister condemned for taunting Gaza flotilla activists in video Israeli settlers grow bolder in West Bank with world distracted by war in Iran The UK said the move reflected its "strong condemnation" of Ben-Gvir's behaviour in taunting those involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla. “This behaviour violates the most basic standards of respect and dignity for people,” the department said. Grudsky Ekstein is the most senior Israeli diplomat in the UK, as there is currently no ambassador in place. The government also expressed concern over the detention conditions shown in what appeared to be a makeshift holding area in Ashdod, on Israel's coast, and demanded an explanation from Israeli authorities. The Foreign Office said it is in touch with the families of a number of British activists detained in Israel and is ready to provide consular support. More than 400 people have been detained following the attempt, including several British nationals and Catherine Connolly, the sister of the Irish president. A similar bid by activists in 2025 also ended with Israel intercepting the vessels and detaining those on board. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said Wednesday she was “truly appalled” by the footage released by Ben-Gvir, which showed some activists with their hands tied behind their backs and kneeling with their heads touching the floor. The videos were also criticised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said it was “not in line with Israel’s values and norms”. The UK sanctioned Ben-Gvir and his fellow minister Bezalel Smotrich in June 2025, over the two's “repeated incitement of violence against Palestinian civilians”.
