Hamas chief in Cairo ahead of visit by Donald Trump’s envoy

Hamas political chief Khalil al-Hayya is due to meet Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad in Cairo on Sunday, in his first visit to Egypt since taking over as head of the terrorist organization in late July. His visit comes just days before that of Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy and son-in-law. Kushner is due to travel soon to Israel and Egypt in an attempt to reduce differences over the American plan for the Gaza Strip. He will be accompanied by Nikolay Mladenov, the High Representative for Gaza within the Board of Peace. The diplomatic push comes after Benjamin Netanyahu publicly rejected the 15-point U.S. roadmap on August 9, which was unveiled in late July. The plan notably calls for the disarmament of Hamas and an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
