About this campaign

At its Annual Representative Meeting in Brighton in June 2026, the British Medical Association passed motions 22, 27, 28, 29 and 55 and Emergency Motion 2 by large majorities: rejecting the use of the IHRA definition of antisemitism in the NHS, defending doctors’ freedom of speech on matters of public conscience, international conflict and humanitarian law, and pausing the implementation of the Lord Mann review, which the government had accepted in full on 4 June 2026.

The IHRA definition, made mandatory across the NHS by the government, is one of the main tools used to silence healthcare workers who speak out about Israel’s genocide in Gaza. It conflates criticism of Israel and of Zionism with anti-Jewish hatred; its own lead drafter has warned it is being used to suppress legitimate speech; and its use in disciplinary processes exposes NHS employers to Employment Tribunal claims. The Mann review places antisemitism above racism against every other group, in a workforce where around 30 per cent of staff and nearly half of doctors come from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

The BMA is now under organised pressure to walk these motions back. Institutions hear from their critics constantly and from their supporters almost never. This campaign sends one personalised letter of support to seven BMA leadership inboxes, the Council secretariat, the Chair of the Representative Body, the Medical Ethics Committee, the International Committee, the EDI Advisory Group, and the feedback and public enquiry teams, thanking the association, and Dr Amit Kochhar as ARM chair, and urging it to hold firm and implement the motions.
