Making a complaint

We hold other newsrooms to account, so we publish how to hold us to account. NewsCord is a regulated member of IMPRESS, the independent press regulator. This page tells you how to complain about something we have published, what we will do about it, and what to do if our answer does not satisfy you.

What we can look at

We can look into complaints about items we have published which are in our control. We adhere to the Standards Code adopted by IMPRESS, and we can only deal with complaints which relate to an alleged breach of the standards set out in that Code.

Much of what you see on NewsCord quotes or analyses journalism published by other outlets. Our own words are in our control: our editorials, our campaign pages, our Media Watchdog analysis, our summaries and our headlines. The original article at another outlet is not, and a complaint about it belongs with that publisher or its own regulator. If you are not sure which of the two you are complaining about, write to us anyway and we will tell you.

You can read the Code on the IMPRESS website.

Who can complain

We can only deal with your complaint if you are:

  • personally and directly affected by an alleged breach of the Code
  • a representative group affected by an alleged breach of the Code, where there is public interest in your complaint
  • a third party seeking to ensure the accuracy of published information

How to complain to us

We are regulated by IMPRESS, but an initial complaint must be made to us, NewsCord, using the following details:

It helps us if you tell us the URL of the item you are complaining about, quote the words you say are wrong or unfair, say which part of the Code you think we have breached, and say what you would like us to do. You do not have to use those words or cite the Code correctly for us to look at your complaint.

4

What happens next

We will acknowledge your complaint by email or in writing within 7 calendar days, and we will normally respond to your complaint with a final decision letter within 21 calendar days. If we uphold your complaint, we will tell you the remedial action we have taken.

Where we have corrected a significant inaccuracy, we also record it on our corrections page, which lists every such correction over a rolling 12 month period.

Referring your complaint to IMPRESS

If you are not satisfied with the final response to your complaint, or if you do not hear from us within 21 calendar days of submitting your complaint, then you can refer your complaint to our independent regulator IMPRESS at impressorg.com/complaints or by contacting them directly using the following information:

Our corrections record

Every article we have amended to correct a significant inaccuracy is listed, with the date and what changed, on our corrections page. We keep that list for a rolling 12 month period, as IMPRESS requires.
