About this campaign

What happened. On 8 June 2026 a man was seriously injured in a knife attack in Belfast. A suspect has been charged and the case is before the courts. In the days that followed, crowds attacked homes and vehicles, families were forced to flee, and the violence spread to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Southampton.

Who poured fuel on it. Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who uses the name Tommy Robinson, circulated the attack footage and called repeatedly for protests. Elon Musk, who owns X and posts to around 240 million followers, amplified that call, reposting 'Only by protesting repeatedly and loudly will there be any change' and sharing an image of the attack above the words 'millions must go'. The PSNI Chief Constable said people had been incited by people who are faceless.

The law already exists. Stirring up racial hatred and encouraging violence are criminal offences under the Public Order Act 1986, the Public Order (Northern Ireland) Order 1987 and the Serious Crime Act 2007. People were convicted and jailed for online posts after the Southport disorder in 2024. The failure is not a missing law. It is that the law is not enforced against the most powerful inciters at the speed their words travel.
