📜 About the Campaign

The Britain Owes Palestine campaign is calling on the UK Government to acknowledge its violations of international law between 1917 and 1948, and issue a formal apology. The campaign has submitted a 400-page legal petition to the Government, prepared by lawyers and legal historians.

This petition draws on incontrovertible primary-source evidence of Britain's actions and tests them against the standards of international law at the time - standards that Britain always maintained it was bound by. It shows clearly that the ongoing suffering of Palestinians today can be directly traced back to Britain's unlawful conduct during this period.

The petition identifies three principal sets of violations:

  1. Occupation without a legal basis. Following the Balfour Declaration in 1917, Britain assumed authority over Palestine without any legal mandate, ruling as an occupying power.
  2. Systemic violation of Palestinians' rights, including war crimes. Between 1917 and 1948, Britain subjected Palestinians to murder, torture, persecution, and other inhumane acts in violation of the international legal standards of the time.
  3. Abandoning Palestine after enabling partition and displacement. Britain played a decisive role in the 1948 partition of Palestine, shaping and enabling the mass dispossession whose consequences persist today.

In light of this evidence and legal analysis, we are calling on MPs to read the petition and press the Government for a meaningful response that acknowledges Britain's historical responsibilities and provides justice for the Palestinian people.
