About this campaign

Joy Gnapi is held at HMP Bronzefield, the women’s prison in Surrey operated under contract by Sodexo. After she advocated for a fellow prisoner, Faiza, who was in urgent need of mental health care, Ms Gnapi was segregated from the rest of the prison and held in cellular confinement for 21 days.

Prolonged segregation is widely recognised to place prisoners at heightened risk of physical and psychological harm. It demands the most careful safeguarding of a person’s health and welfare. The opposite is alleged to have happened to Ms Gnapi.

It is alleged that an officer, Charlyann Dennehy, denied Ms Gnapi her prescribed medication. The account is that Officer Dennehy approached Ms Gnapi claiming she was there to help, then mocked her accent, asked why she could not speak English, and said she did not like “how big” Ms Gnapi’s eyes were, before refusing to hand over the medicine.
