About this campaign

Since the US and Israeli attacks on Iran on 28 February and Iran's subsequent retaliation, several Gulf and Arab states have imposed sweeping restrictions on freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Thousands of activists, bloggers, and local and international journalists have been arrested across the region.

The Gulf Center for Human Rights (GCHR) has published a report describing arrests and other repression in Bahrain, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) has issued a press release decrying the severe restrictions imposed by authorities across the region.

Ahmed Shihab-Eldin is an award-winning journalist who has worked for PBS Frontline, the New York Times, BBC, CNN, NBC and MSNBC. He is a recipient of the British Journalism Award and the Amnesty International Media Award, was recognised by Arabian Business Magazine as one of the '100 Most Influential Young Arabs', and holds a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where he has also taught as an adjunct lecturer.
