About this campaign

On 29 April 2026, Israeli military forces illegally intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters just 37 nautical miles from Crete, Greece — inside the Greek Search-and-Rescue zone. Armed soldiers boarded 22 civilian boats at gunpoint, using drones, communications jamming, and military speedboats. 175 humanitarian crew members — unarmed civilians carrying food, baby formula, and medical supplies for Gaza's starving population — were seized.

The vast majority of the crew were released to Greek authorities. But Israel forcibly transferred two people from international waters to occupied Palestine: Saif Abu Keshek, a Swedish-Spanish-Palestinian humanitarian, and Thiago Ávila, a Brazilian humanitarian. Both are now in Israeli detention.

Saif Abu Keshek is reportedly being subjected to torture. Thiago Ávila is at imminent risk of the same fate, given Israel's documented pattern of torture and ill-treatment of detainees — including sleep deprivation, denial of water, and refusal of medical care, as documented by Amnesty International in previous flotilla interceptions.
