Michigan Senate primary upset
Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary for Michigan’s Senate race, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens, and will face Republican Mike Rogers in November.

NBC News reported that El-Sayed emerged as the winner after a bruising Democratic primary and that Rogers ran unopposed for his party’s nomination.
CNN said El-Sayed’s projected victory dealt “blow[s] to Democratic establishment” in Michigan’s marquee Democratic primary for US Senate.
The BBC described the contest as a narrow win for El-Sayed over Stevens, with El-Sayed “just three points ahead” as about two-thirds of votes were counted.
Trump, Sanders, and reactions
CNN reported that El-Sayed downplayed the narrow margins of his victory and said, “we cannot wait to come together and win in November.”
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the Michigan Democratic primary outcome was “Great news for the Republican Party,” and the BBC also reported that Trump referred to the Democratic Party as the “Doomocrats.”
NPR said progressives saw their biggest win yet in Michigan as El-Sayed beat Stevens, while Trump continued to “flex his power” over Republicans.
The BBC also quoted El-Sayed saying, “I stand in solidarity with my Jewish brothers and sisters,” after addressing opposition tied to his Israel-related positions.
What the results set up
The BBC said El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers in the November midterm elections and framed the race as a test for the left wing of the Democratic Party.

NPR said the outcome of the Democratic primary makes it crucial for Democrats to win the seat in November if they want to take control of the U.S. Senate.
The Guardian reported that Michigan’s major Democratic contest for the US Senate nomination was “too close to call” with about 60% of votes counted, while also noting that Jocelyn Benson clinched the Democratic nomination in the governor’s race.
CNN added that Democrats almost certainly have to hold the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters to have a chance of winning Senate control, with El-Sayed set to face Rogers in the fall.
