Kordofan siege and drone deaths

In Sudan’s Kordofan region, communities in Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan remain trapped in siege conditions that have prevented access to humanitarian aid, leaving civilians without food, medicines, and other essential supplies and services.

Action contre la Faim said the conflict intensified in Kadugli and its surroundings, and it cited a recent incident in which drone attacks against the UN interim security force for Abyei (UNISFA) base in Kadugli killed six UN peacekeepers on 13 December.

The same report said a change of control of territory at Babanusa in Western Kordofan on 1 December triggered a new wave of displacement, while clashes and changes of control in Bara in North Kordofan during November led to killings and widespread displacement.

Action contre la Faim warned that famine has been declared at El Fasher and Kadugli, and it said an imminent risk of famine was identified in 20 other localities in Darfur and Kordofan for January 2026.

A staff member based in Kadugli described the medical collapse, saying, « La plupart des médicaments sont indisponibles depuis deux ans, laissant les communautés sans accès aux soins médicaux ».

El Obeid fears and cholera

The United Nations and the International Organization for Migration warned that El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, could become a new epicenter of the humanitarian crisis as fighting and population movements intensify.

La Presse de Tunisie said IOM displacement-tracking teams recorded the displacement of 2,245 people from Kadugli, Dilling, and villages in Habila locality in South Kordofan between June 28 and 30 following the escalation of fighting.

Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, warned that intensification of hostilities in North Kordofan seriously endangers civilians and complicates humanitarian aid delivery, adding that drone attacks are disrupting access to drinking water and electricity in El Obeid.

In parallel, Anadolu Ajansı reported that the Sudan Doctors Network warned that cholera and measles outbreaks and acute shortages of food and medicine put 200,000 people, including over 20,000 children, at risk in western Bara.

The Sudan Doctors Network said, “portend a humanitarian and health catastrophe that could increase mortality rates, particularly among children and the most vulnerable groups.”

Aid access blocked and displacement

As displacement widens across Kordofan, IOM data cited by La Presse de Tunisie put the number of people leaving the three Kordofan states at 219,319 spread across 1,012 sites in 89 localities across 14 Sudanese states.

La Presse de Tunisie also said its teams recorded 109 incidents causing population displacement in Kordofan between October 25, 2025 and June 23, 2026, while Tom Fletcher warned that the situation further complicates aid delivery.

In the same period, Action contre la Faim said 96% of displaced families in South Kordofan are not able to satisfy essential needs and 75% have at least one child suffering from malnutrition.

Al-Jazeera Net reported that Sudan Doctors Network field information found more than 100 measles cases among children and 45 cholera cases in western Bara areas of North Kordofan, with multiple hospitals and health centers operating “without any medical supplies.”

The Sudan Doctors Network warned that continued interruption of medical and food supplies and the blocking of aid entering the region “forebodes a large-scale humanitarian and health catastrophe” that could lead to higher mortality rates, especially among children and the most vulnerable groups.
