Egypt’s Octagon opens

Egypt’s newly inaugurated State Strategic Command headquarters, nicknamed “Octagon” for its octagon shape, replaced the US Pentagon as the world’s largest defence headquarters, with the complex spanning roughly 22,000 acres.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi officially inaugurated the State Strategic Command Headquarters in Egypt’s new administrative capital on Saturday, signing the founding charter and raising the armed forces flag to mark the opening of the military defence complex.

The Octagon is described as a centralised command hub for the Egyptian armed forces, designed to centralise military leadership, operational planning, intelligence, secure communication and crisis management within a single command structure.

The Times of India said the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia covers 29 acres, including its five-acre central courtyard, while the Octagon’s footprint is roughly 750 times larger than the Pentagon.

WION said Egypt officially inaugurated the Octagon on July 4, and quoted Sisi saying “strategic command headquarters in the new capital ensures the integration of planning and coordination for all branches of the armed forces”.

Ceremony and messaging

Multiple outlets tied the inauguration to a broader push to modernise Egypt’s defence infrastructure, with WION saying the Octagon is a major milestone “especially at a time when there is growing tension in West Asia.”

The National described El Sisi opening the Octagon in Egypt’s New Capital while wearing a field marshal uniform and sunglasses, and said it reflected “the will of the nation” as he delivered an address.

CairoScene said the ceremony included a military inspection, a 21-gun salute, an aerial escort by Apache helicopters, and the raising of the Armed Forces flag, with drone and aerobatic displays.

CairoScene also said the complex is designed to serve as the central command hub for the Egyptian Armed Forces and national crisis management, bringing together strategic coordination, military operations and secure communications within one headquarters.

The Jerusalem Post quoted El Sisi saying at the inauguration, “Egypt is committed to peace for those who want peace,” framing the Octagon as a showcase of Cairo’s power and regional influence.

Scale, systems, and risk

The Octagon’s scale and internal organisation were described in detail, with CairoScene saying the site covers approximately 92 square kilometres and is organised into 13 integrated strategic and logistical zones.

The countdown has begun: on July 3, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza will be inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, twelve years to the day after his military coup

CairoScene said at its centre are eight interconnected octagonal buildings representing different branches and sovereign departments, alongside two administrative buildings dedicated to political leadership, all linked to support secure communications and centralised military command.

Egypt Independent quoted Major General Mohamed Abdel Monem saying the launch of “The Octagon” represents a fundamental paradigm shift in Egypt’s security doctrine, moving from “reactive crisis-response posture” to proactive planning, risk forecasting, and preemptive mitigation.

Egypt Independent also said Abdel Monem described the headquarters as globally rare, noting that only three comparable facilities exist worldwide—located in the US, Russia, and Egypt.

In parallel, Sky News Arabia quoted Lt. Gen. Nasr Salem saying the Octagon “represents the Egyptian Armed Forces’ main command-and-control center for all its branches,” and said it is engineered to be protected against threats including cyberattacks, electronic jamming, disruption, eavesdropping, and espionage.
