AI Images in Search

Amazon is rolling out AI-generated product images inside the Amazon Shopping app search bar, showing images of products “as you type words into the search bar.”

AI can be useful in a lot of places, but there are many scenarios where it doesn’t make sense

The feature is described as working when customers search for items in apparel and home, where “AI-generated images instantly take shape in the suggestions below the search bar.”

Amazon says the generated images are meant to help shoppers who can’t recall terms like “cowl neck,” by bridging “imagination” and “product discovery.”

Once a shopper taps an AI image, Amazon then “shop[s] for visually similar products,” shifting from synthetic previews to real-world listings.

Fake Previews, Real Listings

Multiple outlets frame the same mechanism as a mismatch between what appears in search and what can actually be bought, with The Verge saying the search bar will “show you AI-generated images of products as you describe them.”

Digital Trends goes further, describing the images as “entirely made up, existing purely as visual suggestions to help you find products that look similar.”

Amazon’s pitch, as quoted by 9to5Google, is that customers can tap the generated image that “best aligns with their vision and shop for visually similar products.”

Android Authority similarly describes the flow as AI images appearing during search refinement, then “the app will pull up similar real-world products” after a user selects an AI suggestion.

Trust and Expectations

The feature’s central risk, as described by coverage, is that shoppers may treat AI previews as inventory, with Digital Trends warning that the images are “not real products you can actually buy.”

Gadget Review characterizes the underlying problem as a trust gap, writing that “Shopping interfaces have trained users that product images represent real, available items.”

Amazon’s broader framing remains focused on disambiguation, with the company positioning the tool as a way to help shoppers when they “can’t think of the term ‘cowl neck.’”

As the rollout expands, Hipertextual reports that Amazon confirmed the features “se integrarán en su app para iOS y Android,” while noting that “Por el momento solo estarán disponibles en Estados Unidos.”
