Acton defeats Ramaswamy

Democrat Amy Acton won the Ohio governor race, defeating Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, and Acton became the first woman to serve as Ohio’s governor. Acton’s mother Donna Arthur said her daughter "lied her entire life".

Acton’s victory ended 16 years of Republican control in Ohio, after Ramaswamy spent millions on deeply personal attack ads featuring Acton’s estranged mother. Ramaswamy conceded to Acton and urged his supporters to root for Acton and her administration, while he acknowledged the campaign had become "bitter at times in both directions."

The ad and the backlash

President Donald Trump defended the ad and praised Arthur and Ramaswamy, posting on Truth Social: "[He should] let everyone hear the mother of a flawed, dishonest, and unable to explain".

Vice President J. D. Vance told Republicans to "stop whining" about the ad and said he was "a little appalled" by criticism from members of his own party.

Ohio’s current Republican Governor Mike DeWine called it "deeply troubling."

The ad was eventually discontinued last week, after politicians of both parties urged Ramaswamy to take it down and apologize.

What comes next in Ohio

Acton said in her acceptance speech on Tuesday, "The healing begins today," and she added, "My promise to Ohio, to those who voted for me and those who did not, is that I will work with anyone and everyone." The Ohio Governor race has shifted 19.14 points toward Democrats compared with the 2024 presidential election.

WCMH said Acton pledged to sign three executive orders on her first day of office to target corruption, including creating an anti-corruption task force and adjusting political appointment ethics. WCMH also said Acton planned to establish data center guardrails and implement a tax cut for working families as she prepared to replace term-limited Republican Governor Mike DeWine.
