Apple Unveils AirPods Max 2 With H2 Chip, Live Translation, and Improved ANC

Apple has unveiled the AirPods Max 2, the second-generation version of its premium over-ear headphones, powered by the H2 chip which brings significant improvements in noise cancellation, sound quality, and intelligent features.

The announcement comes as a surprise, arriving just days after Apple's busy spring product launches that included new MacBooks, iPads, and other devices.

The new headphones maintain the distinctive aluminum design of the original while introducing five new color options: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.

According to Apple, the H2 chip enables up to 1.5 times more effective active noise cancellation compared to the previous generation, helping block background sounds like airplane engines or train noise more effectively.

The company also emphasizes that the headphones remain firmly positioned in the audiophile lane, targeting users seeking high-fidelity immersion rather than the health and fitness features found in the AirPods Pro lineup.

The audio quality improvements represent a significant upgrade for the AirPods Max lineup, with Apple introducing a new high-dynamic-range amplifier that delivers cleaner audio while maintaining the signature sound profile.

The new system enhances bass response and produces more natural mids and highs, while also supporting 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio when connected via the included USB-C cable.

This lossless audio capability allows musicians and producers to fully utilize the headphones throughout their professional workflow on Logic Pro and other music creation apps.

Apple specifically notes that the AirPods Max 2 are the only headphones that let musicians both create and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking.

The company also claims that Spatial Audio content sounds better than ever, with improved localization of instruments, more accurate and consistent bass response, and more natural-sounding mids and highs.

The microphone array has been retuned for higher-fidelity vocal and instrument capture, making the headphones more suitable for podcasters and content creators.

The H2 chip unlocks several intelligent features that bring the AirPods Max 2 in line with Apple's newer audio products, most notably Live Translation powered by Apple Intelligence.

This feature acts as a real-time bridge during in-person conversations, translating speech to the user's preferred language in real-time.

Additional AI-powered capabilities include Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts the levels of ANC and Transparency in response to the environment to optimize the audio experience.

Conversation Awareness helps lower content volume and reduce background noise when a user starts speaking to someone nearby, while Voice Isolation uses advanced computational audio to prioritize the user's voice during calls and block out ambient noise.

Apple has also introduced Siri Interactions, allowing users to respond to Siri announcements by simply nodding their head yes or gently shaking their head no, eliminating the need for verbal commands.

The company positions these features as demonstrating its ongoing intent to turn audio products into smarter AI assistants.

Apple has focused on enhancing the AirPods Max 2's capabilities for content creators while maintaining its premium positioning.

The headphones now support studio-quality audio recording, allowing interviewers, podcasters, singers, and other creators to record their content with higher-quality audio and more natural vocal texture.

A new Camera Remote feature allows users to capture content at a distance by pressing the Digital Crown to take photos and start or stop video recording while using the Camera app or compatible third-party camera apps on iPhone or iPad.

The design remains largely unchanged from the original AirPods Max, though the Max 2 now carries an IP54 rating for dust resistance and protection against water splashing from any direction.

While lacking the proximity and comfort needed for background health tracking, Apple continues to position these headphones as the ultimate tool for high-fidelity immersion rather than fitness tracking.

The company has also updated the wireless connectivity to Bluetooth 5.3, bringing improved stability and more efficient power use, while maintaining the same 20 hours of battery life with ANC and Spatial Audio enabled.

The AirPods Max 2 maintains the same $549 price point as its predecessor, with preorders beginning March 25 and availability starting early April in the U.S. and more than 30 other countries and regions.

The headphones are made with environmentally conscious materials, including 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, 100 percent recycled polyester in the ear cushion, and 100 percent recycled gold plating and tin solder in all Apple-designed printed circuit boards.

The paper packaging is 100 percent fiber-based and can be easily recycled, aligning with Apple's 2030 goal to be carbon neutral across its entire footprint.

Customers can choose AppleCare+ to cover the headphones, or in the U.S., AppleCare One to protect multiple products in one simple plan.
