Netanyahu links Iran, Hezbollah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government is committed to completing the elimination of the Iranian regime and its proxy terrorist organization Hezbollah, adding that peace with Lebanon will follow. Netanyahu told reporters while visiting the new Kiryat Shmona-Tel Hai University for the opening of the academic year that “the only way to prevent this is to topple this regime, and then, in parallel, the elimination of Hezbollah will follow.”

Netanyahu said that as long as the regime remains alive, “it is so fanatical that it will try again to do what it did a year ago, when we stopped it: produce nuclear bombs and rebuild the axis,” and he tied that to Israel’s pushback of Hezbollah’s special Radwan Force in Southern Lebanon. Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that if Hezbollah joins an Iranian attack on the State of Israel, the IDF will move into additional areas within the Nabatieh and Litani region in Lebanon’s south, “whereby the territories occupied will be evacuated of their residents ... and made a permanent part of Israel’s security zone in Lebanon.”

Talks with Trump, election

Netanyahu said he discussed eliminating Iran’s regime with US President Donald Trump, and he framed the conversation as part of an effort to prevent Iran from rebuilding its nuclear programme and the so-called Axis of Resistance. Netanyahu said, “I have spoken about this with President Trump more than once, including the day before yesterday,” while speaking at the newly-built Tel Hai University in Kiryat Shmona next to the Lebanese border.

AzerNews reported that Netanyahu linked the question of who would permanently eliminate the Iranian threat to Israel’s upcoming parliamentary vote on October 27, describing it as “decisive before the elections.” The Times of Israel reported that Netanyahu said he spoke with Trump on Sunday and vowed to dismantle the Iranian terror axis from Kiryat Shmona, while also saying “the elimination of Hezbollah will come in parallel.”

Security zone and threats

Israel Katz said the IDF established a security zone inside Lebanese territory covering 700 square kilometers, stretching from the Mediterranean coast to Beaufort Castle, the Ali al-Taher heights, and the outskirts of Mount Hermon. Katz said the security zone was “deep and empty,” and he described it as “completely different” from the area the Israel Defense Forces occupied from 1985 to 2000.

Katz also warned that Israel will not withdraw from the area until Hezbollah is “disarmed throughout Lebanon and the threat to the residents of the north is eliminated,” while threatening that any shooting or drone launches toward Israel would be met with a strong response targeting Beirut’s Dahiyeh district. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei told visiting Pakistani army chief Asim Munir that “Not even a tiny bit of enriched nuclear material will leave Iran,” and he said there would be “no negotiations until America takes steps to build trust.”
