Life sentence in Berlin
A Berlin court sentenced palliative care physician Johannes M., 41, to life in prison after convicting him of murdering at least 15 patients between September 2021 and July 2024.
“Berlin court sentences a doctor to life for murdering 15 patients under palliative care A Berlin court has convicted and sentenced a German doctor to life in prison on charges of murdering 15 of his patients who were under palliative care BERLIN -- A Berlin court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced a German doctor to life in prison on charges of murdering 15 of his patients who were under palliative care, in a case involving allegations he torched the homes of victims to try to cover up the crimes”
Prosecutors said he injected patients during home visits with a lethal combination of drugs, and the court found the victims were in serious condition but “were not facing imminent death.”

The indictment described the doctor as injecting 12 women and three men aged 25 to 94 without their knowledge or consent, using a lethal mixture of anesthetics and a muscle relaxant.
In July 2024, prosecutors said he killed a 75-year-old man at his home in central Berlin and, hours later, a 76-year-old woman in a nearby neighborhood.
The court ruled the murder conviction was under aggravated circumstances, and it permanently revoked his medical license.
“Lust for murder”
Prosecutors described the case as one driven by killing itself, with the Times of India quoting that the physician had “a lust for murder,” and that he had “no other motive for killing these people than the act of killing itself.”
The Times of India also reported that presiding judge Sylvia Busch called the defendant a “serial killer” at the centre of an “unfathomable” and “extraordinary” case.

In court, the doctor remained silent for much of the yearlong trial before confessing last month, and he told the court: “Throughout it all, I thought this was the best thing for everyone.”
The ABC News report said the Berlin court found the physician administered an anesthetic and a muscle relaxer without patients’ knowledge or consent, and that the drug cocktail “paralysed the respiratory muscles.”
Prosecutors said on at least five occasions he allegedly set fires to victims’ apartments to cover up the killings, and they said the attempt to incinerate a crime scene failed when the fire did not catch.
More cases, no release
The conviction came as investigators continued to review additional deaths, with prosecutors and police initially examining 395 cases and suspicions arising in 95 of them, while the doctor was convicted in 15 cases and investigations continued into 76 others.
“A German palliative-care physician was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday, July 8, in Berlin, for the murders of 15 patients during home visits, the judge suspecting this 'serial killer' of further fatal interventions”
The Times of India said prosecutors were investigating 76 other cases that could make the matter one of the worst serial murder cases in Germany’s history if proven.
The court’s finding of particularly severe guilt was expected to prevent early release, and the ruling also aligned with prosecutors’ request for a lifetime ban from practicing medicine.
In testimony and statements reported by multiple outlets, relatives described the impact of the killings, including the mother of a 25-year-old victim saying, “She never said she didn’t want to live anymore,” and a son saying his mother “wanted to keep living.”
The investigation into the case is still ongoing, and the doctor could be charged with additional murders as prosecutors pursue the remaining cases under review.
