Brighton surge to second
Brighton beat 10-man Brentford 2-0 at the Amex Stadium to move into second place in the Premier League and enter the November international break five points behind Arsenal.
“No. We are not in a title race.”
Diego Gómez scored a 15th-minute opener for Brighton, and Pascal Gross added a 42nd-minute penalty after Keane Lewis-Potter’s shirt pull on Luka Vuskovic.
Igor Thiago was sent off eight minutes after a VAR review after catching Brighton midfielder Chema Andrés in the face with a raised arm, and referee Michael Oliver upgraded Thiago’s punishment after a trip to the pitch-side monitor.
Fabian Hurzeler’s side lifted themselves above Manchester City and returned to within five points of the leaders Arsenal, with Brighton’s win described as their seventh from 10 top-flight games this term.
Pascal Gross also played down title talk, telling Sky Sports after Sunday’s success, "No. We are not in a title race."
Thiago red and reactions
Michael Oliver initially booked both players after Thiago reacted with annoyance to having his shirt pulled and then being pushed by Andres, but the referee upgraded Thiago’s punishment to red after the VAR review. Sky Sports said Thiago was dismissed after he caught Chema in the face with his arm and split his lip, and the match report tied the red card to Oliver’s brief visit to the VAR monitor. Brentford head coach Keith Andrews said, "We’ve lost two games and both when down to 10 men," and he added that the team needed to analyse itself first.
Pascal Gross told Sky Sports, "You see the Premier League, the margins, you look at the results - we are not getting carried away yet," as Brighton prepared to focus on the next game after the international break. The Guardian said the video assistant referee, Stuart Attwell, delivered the verdict of "violent conduct" and "with force" from Stockley Park after Thiago’s shove was first ruled a yellow.

What Brighton can build
Brighton’s win lifted them above City and left them on 22 points, while Arsenal sat on 27 after their 1-0 win at home to Hull City on Saturday. ESPN said Brighton’s victory came after the club had played Conference League fixtures in Czechia and Spain either side of a trip to Liverpool and two visits to Manchester City. BBC Sport quoted Leon Osman saying, "The football they're playing is outstanding," and Osman added that Champions League qualification was "probably the minimum" he would expect Brighton to achieve.
“We've only played 10 games, so therefore we focus on the next game after the international break.”
Sky Sports said Hurzeler told his team to focus on the process after the international break, and he said, "We've only played 10 games, so therefore we focus on the next game after the international break." Reuters said Brighton’s lofty position was reinforced by the 2-0 win, while it also framed the weekend’s other major talking point as Manchester United’s 4-4 draw with Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
