De Miguel dies after collision
CD Tenerife announced that its player Jesús de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, after a violent collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match. The collision occurred as minute 96 of extra time was being played with the score at 2-2, when Owono left his area toward the center of the field to clear a ball and struck De Miguel’s chest with his knee, causing De Miguel to collapse. CD Tenerife said the forward was transported to the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital after being placed in intensive care on Monday evening, and the severity of the situation caused the game to be suspended.
De Miguel’s condition was described as "stable but serious" on Monday but his health deteriorated on Tuesday morning, and the player died at 07:00 GMT (08:00 local time). CD Tenerife’s statement said, "There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness," as the club communicated the death at 8:00 a.m.
Owono red card, match abandoned
The match between Tenerife and Andorra ended with the referee showing Owono a red card before abandoning the game, after players frantically waved medical staff onto the field to tend to De Miguel.
The ball was cleared from the Tenerife penalty area and bounced towards midfield, where the 30-year-old, who had come on as a substitute in the 59th minute with his side leading 2-0, was challenged by Owono and the keeper’s knee appeared to strike Miguel in the chest.
Owono was immediately sent off for the challenge and the game was suspended so medical staff could treat the player before he was taken by ambulance to hospital.
Andorra sent condolences, saying, "With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel," and it also reported Gerard Pique’s message: "I am sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesus."
CD Tenerife said the family asked for maximum respect for their privacy in these terrible moments, after the club announced the player’s death at 8:00 a.m.

Spanish football pauses, tributes
The Spanish Football Federation announced that Tuesday’s Spanish Cup fixtures had been postponed, and it also suspended the Copa del Rey Mapfre and the Iberdrola Queen’s Cup matches scheduled for this Tuesday as a sign of mourning. The RFEF ordered the suspension of the matches scheduled for this Tuesday, November 3, corresponding to the first and third eliminatories of the Copa del Rey Mapfre and the Iberdrola Queen’s Cup, respectively, and it also suspended the presentation of the Spain under-21 team match against Japan in Almendralejo. UEFA matches would include a minute of silence in memory of Jesús, and Real Madrid held a minute of silence during its morning training.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas said, "Today, we all share the terrible pain of an irreparable loss," and he added, "My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, teammates and to the whole club." FC Andorra sent condolences saying, "With heavy hearts and devastated, we would like to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel, to all his colleagues and friends, and to CD Tenerife," as clubs and leagues prepared to mark the death across Spain.
