Charles Leclerc Wins British Grand Prix at Silverstone After Verstappen Crash and Antonelli Problems

Charles Leclerc won the British Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon at Silverstone, finishing ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Leclerc’s victory came after Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader who started from pole, had “several problems” and finished 16th, while Max Verstappen’s late crash brought out the safety car.

Sky Sport said Leclerc’s success at Silverstone put him “250^ per la Ferrari,” with Russell second and Hamilton third, and it noted that Antonelli “accusa problemi alla sospensione nel finale” while fighting for the win.

The Post reported that Leclerc’s win was his ninth in Formula 1 and that Ferrari’s two drivers arrived in the first three positions “per la prima volta dal Gran Premio di Abu Dhabi nel dicembre del 2024.”

The Guardian described a chaotic finish in which the British Grand Prix ended under a safety car after “un'aspettata final-lap showdown” turned into a “ghost of an FIA software glitch,” with the crowd booing as the race was declared under caution.

The Guardian quoted Verstappen’s reaction to the incident: “Fuck this car, unbelievable,” after he spun off at Stowe with four laps to go.

The Independent said the safety car was deployed for the last five laps, leaving Leclerc to “cruised to victory,” and it described how Ferrari’s decision to pit Hamilton and switch his tyres cost him second place as Russell nipped ahead.

RFI quoted Hamilton’s frustration after a five-second penalty for a false start, saying: “I just didn’t have it today. I jumped the start and I got a five-second penalty... but Charles had the pace on,” as the race ended behind the safety car.

The Independent reported that Antonelli’s pointless race reduced his lead over Russell to “just 25 points,” while Hamilton was “only 32 points behind” after earning a 16th podium at the British Grand Prix.

RFI said Antonelli still leads the title race with 179 points, 25 ahead of Russell, with Hamilton a further seven points back in third, and it added that Leclerc moved to fourth with 108 points.

FormulaPassion said the race ended under safety car after Verstappen’s exit at Stowe with four laps to go, and it described how the “Safety Car In This Lap” message was displayed erroneously due to a software error.

Looking ahead, FormulaPassion said the F1 calendar returns “tra due settimane, nel weekend del 19 luglio” with the next race at Spa-Francorchamps, described as the “decima gara della stagione.”
