Chelsea lands Rogers
Chelsea agreed to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a record £117m, with the deal described as surpassing the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.
“Chelsea agree club-record £117m deal to sign Rogers from Villa Aston Villa have accepted a £117-million ($157”
Sports Chosun said Rogers is expected to sign a six-year contract with an option to extend for an additional year, and that he is scheduled to undergo a medical test immediately after returning from England’s schedule following the 2026 North America Central America World Cup.

The London Evening Standard framed the move as Chelsea hijacking Rogers, noting that Arsenal were unwilling to go to the price and that Rogers is set to join Chelsea after the World Cup had finished.
Sky Sports added that Rogers is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge with the option of another year, and said he will undergo a medical on Monday after he returns from America after England’s World Cup campaign.
Arsenal, Alonso, medical
Multiple outlets described Arsenal as the main rival for Rogers, with the London Evening Standard saying Arsenal were stepping up their pursuit and that Chelsea were told how much it would cost to sign Maxence Lacroix as they consider a loan move for Mamadou Sarr.
ESPN said Arsenal were ready to step up their interest in the 23-year-old but that Chelsea moved quickly to seal an agreement following England’s World Cup semifinal exit to Argentina.

Sky Sports quoted Sky Sports News chief correspondent Kaveh Solhekol saying Rogers is out with the England squad in the United States and that “as soon as England return to the UK, he will have his medical in London with Chelsea on Monday”.
The Guardian said Rogers is in line to become Chelsea’s record signing, trumping the £115m paid for Moisés Caicedo in 2023, and tied the deal to Xabi Alonso’s rebuild after a disappointing season.
Records and sell-on
The transfer is also tied to financial records and downstream payments, with Sports Chosun saying the fee sets a new record for the highest transfer fee ever paid for an English player and that it will surpass the 116 million pounds Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson.
“David Ornstein reported that Chelsea had agreed to pay 117 million pounds for Morgan Rogers, a figure that would set a record in England”
Sky Sports said Middlesbrough stand to make a further £20.3m as part of a sell-on clause agreed for Rogers when they sold him to Aston Villa in January 2024, and it added that Boro sold Rogers for £15.5m and agreed a clause for 20 per cent of any future profit Villa made on the sale.
The Guardian said Rogers played an instrumental role in Villa reaching the Champions League and winning the Europa League last season, providing 14 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, and it noted he started on the right wing in the semi-final defeat by Argentina and created the opening goal for Anthony Gordon.
Fox Sports said the deal includes a contract running until 2032 with an option for a further 12 months, and it described Rogers as having scored 31 goals and provided 29 assists in 125 appearances for Villa.
