Chelsea land £117m Rogers
Chelsea have completed the signing of England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a British record transfer fee of £117m, with the 23-year-old set to undergo a medical in London and sign a six-year contract with an option for a further year.
Rogers returned from the United States after featuring for England at the World Cup and said in his announcement video, "I'm joining the biggest club in London," as he prepared to join Xabi Alonso's squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Chelsea’s official site said Rogers has signed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033 and will link up with Alonso’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 season, while also noting his England debut in November 2024 and 22 caps.
The deal was agreed on Saturday, shortly before Rogers took to the field in England's bronze-medal victory over France, and Chelsea moved quickly after England's semi-final defeat by Argentina last Wednesday.
The transfer also reshapes Chelsea’s attacking options, with the BBC noting Rogers’ versatility and a possible fit alongside Cole Palmer, while Sky Sports said the fee makes Rogers the most expensive British player in history, beating the £116m record set by Manchester City for Elliot Anderson.
Rogers, Alonso and Arsenal
Rogers framed the move as a project he wanted to be part of, telling Chelsea’s announcement video, "The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward is something I want to be a part of."
Chelsea’s signing also came as Arsenal missed out, with the BBC saying Arsenal were offered the chance to match the bid but informed Villa they were committed to their lower valuation and were willing to let him join Chelsea on those terms.
Sky Sports reported that Arsenal had previously identified Rogers as their top forward target this summer but were unwilling to match the fee that Chelsea agreed, while the BBC described Chelsea as tracking Rogers for more than two years and moving after England’s semi-final defeat by Argentina.
In the background of the negotiations, the BBC said a combined effort involving Chelsea’s sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso and co-owner Behdad Eghbali helped secure the deal, and it added that those close to the negotiations say Cole Palmer was aware of developments as Rogers put it, "one of my best friends in life".
Chelsea’s own announcement highlighted Rogers’ immediate context, saying he will join Alonso’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 season after establishing himself as a leading young attacking talent at Aston Villa, where his goals and assists contributed to 40 goals in 85 Premier League appearances.
